It was the site of a battle between the settlers and the Native Americans. One of the bedrooms in the home has an Indian theme to honor the indigenous people who lived here. It is an easy walk to the beach, and if you are there at low tide, you may be able to spot a small tunnel that goes through the Battle Rock to a more secluded beach on the other side. The Crazy Norwegian restaurant is an easy stop, on your way back to the house. Don't miss it during your stay. The food is great! Paradise Point is 2.6 miles from the house. It is different from Battle Rock because it isn't in a cove. The waves crash on the beach with sand that sifts under your feet. Garrison Lake is west of the house. It has a small boat ramp and would be a great place to fish or paddle a kayak. Port Orford Heads State Park is a coastal park about 10 minutes from the house. There are 3 main walking trails. From each of these vantage points, you can see commercial fishing boats, orcas, gray whales, sea lions, and various sea birds. There is also a US Coast Guard lifeboat station museum with a boat that is identical to the one that was used in the movie "The Finest Hours." The lifeboat station was in operation from 1934-1970. It is one of the earliest Coast Guard Lifeboat Stations. Bandon is a city located about a half hour to the north. There are fun shops in 'Old Town' as well as docks to go crabbing on once you acquire gear and licenses. If you travel about an hour and a half to the South, you can tour the California Redwood forest with its unimaginably giant trees.
