Welcome to the Boathouse! You read that right: Boathouse (not House Boat!) This house, which has been part of our family for generations, is the perfect home-base while you visit the special island of Chincoteague! Watch the lighthouse from across the marsh, go for a canoe ride through the channel, catch some crabs off the private pier, or make your way to the famous Assateague Beach - this cozy, quirky house is perfect for those seeking a unique and memorable adventure on Chincoteague Island! Spacious boathouse with a rustic, historic, post & beam front section & an airy, updated back section. Originally built in 1940s, the house was built over the water to harbor — you guessed it — boats! It was turned into a house in the 1970s and has been in our family ever since. In the front of the house, there is one master bedroom. Above the living room & kitchen, you can climb the ladder to find a cozy, lofted second bedroom area with two twin beds. There is also a full bath in the front section of the house. In the back section of the house, there is a second living room with a futon couch and more stunning views of the waterfront. Continue on back to find the second bedroom, complete with 2 sets of bunkbeds. The second full bath is located in this section of the house. The whole front of the house offers gorgeous waterfront views of the marsh & iconic Chincoteague lighthouse (try to call "First Light!" for good luck!). Stroll down the long pier into the marsh, unwind & have dinner on the side porch, do some amazing bird watching, or take the canoe for a spin! The driveway has room for two cars side by side near the house, as well as room for plenty more down the length of the driveway. Though rare, the driveway can become flooded with water depending on the level of the tide & the weather. We recommend keeping an eye on the tide & parking by the shed (or temporarily across the street on Wayne Rd. if levels look extremely high, please do not park on Wayne unless the driveway is badly flooding). There are some mud boots in the entry hallway in case you need to walk in a bit of shallow water. The Boathouse is an adventure! With the house built over the water so many years ago, you'll feel immersed in the nature around you. To respect the land & ensure an enjoyable stay, there are a few things you'll want to look out for: Like any coastal island, Chincoteague is affected by tides. Be sure to check for any high tide warnings — though rare, water can occasionally cover the driveway but there is street parking available for any cars, as needed! The marsh is a glorious sight, day or night, but it can also be muddy and have strong currents! We do not recommend swimming. Staying in a historic, unique house like this one, we ask any visitors to follow our guidelines to treat the house & its quirks with care & love during your visit, and truly enjoy the experience of this memorable, special place!
