Half an hour to Cape Town International Airport the Monkey Rock cottage is well-positioned as a weekend escape from Cape Town or Johannesburg where you can experience some of the best land-based whale watching in the world (June to November). Along with other wild and birdlife Rock Hyrax or Dassie (the closest living relative to the Elephant), Cape Fur Seals, and Clawless Otters are often spotted feeding on fish and octopuses etc. Conveniently situated on the 72 km Helderberg Wine route and just 30 minutes from the Stellenbosch Wine region this property provides an ideal base from which to explore numerous Wine estates. Around 30 are dotted along the lower slopes of the Helderberg Mountains with picturesque views of the sparkling waters of False Bay. Other popular activities nearby include Scuba diving tours, Fishing charters, Cage diving with sharks, kayaking, golfing, etc. In addition, all the attractions of Cape Town are only 40 minutes away. The property is located within the Steenbras Nature Reserve and includes the well-known Steenbras River Gorge and Crystal Pools hiking trail which is a popular destination for abseiling, kloof jumping, and swimming in the rock pools, as well as two more hiking trails known as the Danie Miller hiking trail and the Klipspringer hiking trail. Other activities enjoyed along the beautiful coastline include whale watching, scenic drives, and coastal fishing. Part of the greater Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. The area is often referred to as ‘the heart of the fynbos.’ With more than 1 600 plant species, it boasts the greatest floral diversity per unit area than anywhere else in the world. The area supports five different vegetation types and is regarded as one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. Some safety considerations when hiking : Never hike alone, and always keep to the trails.
