Other things to note Lesser known things that are more eclectic – From South to North off 13. Eastern Shore Of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is just off rt 13 after you cross the cbbt onto the eastern shore. There is a small museum and there are some interesting walking trails with overlooks. There is a trail that access a tunnel that houses a very large canon/gun along with a life sized shell that was originally made to be able to shoot across the Chesapeake Bay to protect against ships entering en route to Washington DC. This park also has road access to Wise point boat launch and kayak launch right near by. Kiptopeake has some interesting sights and historic stories as well. The boats off the coast are actually made of concrete…..an idea whose limitations quickly became known and therefore abandoned….hence they now serve only as breakwalls. Some nice walking beach and great network of trails in here too. There are some platforms (just before the boat launch and parking lot) on the left for bird watching. It is a pathway for many types of migratory birds. Field Glasses recommended. Oyster is a super quaint, little seaside village that may have opened their new nature trail. It is seaside and also has a boat launch and Cherrystone clams do some farming there. Cape Charles has two Marina’s. Oyster Farm and Cape Charles Harbor. Both are interesting to discover. Oyster Farm Marina also has a nice restaurant to watch the sunsets and get some decent food and fresh oysters. The Shanty Restaurant is more low key and across town on the Cape Charles Harbor with Hook at Harvey fine dining restaurant with French influences in the same immediate vicinity at the marina’s end. Eastville Courthouse: has the oldest, continuous, court records in the country. One can go in and see what people were being arrested for and suing about, over 300 years ago……newsflash, its mostly all the same stuff. Property line disputes, personality conflicts, theft. SSDD. Some interesting real estate transactions in there and you realize pretty quickly some of the old money family names from a dozen generations ago or more. There is a roadside placard on the way into the town detailing a story about young man of 13 named “Thomas Savage” was the first settler in 1607. Think Savage Neck Road…..where sunset dunes is located. I do believe that land belonged to Thomas. Machipongo Trading Company, the Barrier Island Center Museum and Quail Cove Farms organic store are all just off 13 and worth a look. Exmore is the next town of consequence to the north with Willis Warf nearby. Wachapreague a little seaside town with the Island House Restaurant that has indoor and outdoor seating and the occasional music. A nice lunch spot. Onancock is just up the road and it actually has a Walmart (whopeee!!). It is about the size of Cape Charles, perhaps a little smaller. There is an interesting Sculpture/Foundry just south of the Walmart called Turner Sculpture. They highlight the “lost wax process” of casting and have some very nice wildlife Bronzes. Bill and his son David Turner own and operate this foundry and store with some first-class sculptures. Wallops Island is a bit further North but, on the way east to Chincoteague. Wallops has a NASA facility and they send rockets into space about 60X a year. There is an observation area and some interesting stuff to see. Drill down a bit and you can find something that may be of interest to you. Chincoteague…..home of the wild ponies. This is a nice town with some nice seaside beach (with surfable waves), a lighthouse, a nature preserve, mariners’ museum, etc. A good day trip with plenty to see. Assateague is a bit further to the north but also worth visiting. Not much of a town there but some more beach and possible wild pony sightings. Ocean City is a short drive from Chincoteague with the piers, boardwalk, etc. Drill down on Earth maps and you will find many other possible sights nearby. Most are nature oriented and there are an abundance of additional nature preserves.
