Our dog is Maisie, Beam, the tom, and the chickens may greet you! Don't worry there is a fence separating you from the animals. While the guesthouse IS treated for pests the Orchard is not. We do not spray chemical herbicides or pesticides for weeds and bugs, and we’d like to explain why this choice is intentional and beneficial—to the orchard, the chickens, pollinators, and ultimately to the food system we all depend on. Supporting Pollinators Bees, butterflies, birds, and other beneficial insects play a vital role in keeping orchards healthy. These pollinators are responsible for fruit production and overall plant vitality. Many common weed and insect treatments can harm or kill these helpful species, even when applied carefully. By avoiding these chemicals, we create a safer habitat where pollinators can thrive and continue doing the essential work of pollination. A Healthier Orchard Ecosystem Allowing some weeds and insects to coexist helps maintain natural balance. Beneficial insects help control pests naturally, reducing the need for interventions. Ground cover plants protect soil from erosion, improve water retention, and support microorganisms that nourish fruit trees from the ground up. What may look “untidy” at first glance is actually a living, resilient ecosystem at work. Better for the Land and the Future Chemical treatments can build up in soil and water over time, impacting plant health and nearby wildlife. Our low intervention approach prioritizes long term soil health so the orchard can continue producing fruit for years to come—without harming the surrounding environment. What This Means for Your Stay You may see wildflowers, clover, or other native plants growing naturally, and you may notice more insects than you’re used to in highly managed landscapes. This is a sign of a healthy, functioning ecosystem. Rest assured, we monitor the orchard carefully to ensure it remains safe and enjoyable for our guests. We appreciate your understanding and support of this approach. By staying here, you’re helping us care for the land in a way that benefits pollinators, protects nature, and sustains the orchard’s future.
