Older house on Burnt Coat Harbor, decks surrounding house looking over harbor. Two br's and bath upstairs, old country store attached downstairs w/ bath, queen bed, 2 blow up queens. Stocked pantry, screen porch, 2 bikes, 2 kayaks, 100s of movies and books. Coffee machine, espresso, Keurig, BBQ. Map and directions available after booking, but in general it is wise to call the Maine State Ferry Service in Bass Harbor, Maine, to make ferry reservations going and returning. Once on the Island, from the ferry terminal, the house is situated on Burnt Coat Harbor, across the Island, first left past the small satellite fire station, down the hill, last house on the left. Parking is on uphill side of the house in front of the boat (which is for sale). The door will be unlocked. The Island is safe so keys are not necessary. Phone numbers for Wesley and for the housekeeper, Lisa Stanley, will be provided after booking. My greatest pleasure is getting to talk to guests when they arrive and making sure all goes well. Call or email anytime. Boat rides to Stonington, and sometimes Isle au Haut, for dinner and shopping leave from Normie Burns' wharf on weekends and some week days. Normie will also sell you lobsters for a low price, lower than the lobster pounds on the harbor. Beaches are covered with tumbled rocks, beach glass and driftwood. Yacht clubs fill the harbor in the summer. There is one small but sufficient grocery store, TIMS, that miraculously has everything including an attached "take out" with great food and picnic tables. Scattered around the island are small gift shops with homemade crafts, foods and antiques. Once a summer there is an "art crawl" with open studios, and several times through the summer there will be lobster dinners, church suppers, and music, dance and "theater" at the Hall. Bringing a car is a must, but for many activities in can be left in the driveway in favor of walking, hiking, biking, or rowing. There are numerous hiking trails, one through Hockamock Head where the Lighthouse is located, beaches (The Fine Sand Beach is a beautiful walk), and a fresh water swimming pond, the Quarry Pond, across the Harbor in Minturn. Sunday mornings there is a community breakfast at the Odd Fellows Hall, and if you are on the Island near the Fourth of July, there will be fireworks over the Harbor and a Pig Roast in Minturn. The Library in Atlantic is modern and filled with books, movies, internet access (a screened porch on the back for after hours internet), art, and a schedule of films, booktalks, and other activities. Down the driveway past the library is the amazing Saturn Press which ships cards and other artworks worldwide. A must visit!
