Mountainside Retreat

A gorgeous, peaceful retreat, famed as a filming location for "Tremors" and owned by the builder of the Tuttle Creek Ashram. This unique 400-acre property was established by my grandfather, a philosopher. The spacious, comfortable home is located at 5,600’ elevation, a 15-minute drive from the town of Lone Pine and 25 minutes from the Whitney Portal trailhead. The house has hosted diverse guests, from families, to Badwater winners, to Whitney climbers, to couples seeking a getaway. This large, comfortable house is nestled at 5,600 feet elevation, just 8 miles from the charming town of Lone Pine and at the very base of the towering 14,026-foot Mount Langley. More than just a place to stay, this offers a unique experience. The property, once owned by a philosopher and mystic, is a true off-the-grid escape. The house is solar-powered and has no Wi-Fi, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural splendor surrounding you. (Cell reception enables guests to stay connected and even stream video.) Perfect Base Camp or Tranquil Retreat The house is ideal for adventurers or those seeking a peaceful escape. It's the perfect base camp for climbing the epic Mount Whitney; exploring filming locations in the Alabama Hills; or hiking Cottonwood Lakes. Relax on one of the two screened porches while taking in the views of the serene Inyo Mountains and the south face of Lone Pine Peak. The region is home to diverse wildlife, including deer, quail, and bighorn sheep. A Piece of History and Hollywood Magic This property was a filming location for the original Tremors movie starring Kevin Bacon (see photos). Inside Layout The house has three bedrooms, two with attached full baths. One bathroom is located in the hallway. There are four twin beds and one queen, although two of the twin beds can be modified to a king upon request. The dining table and east screened porch table each seat six people. There are three furnished porches with mountain views. Guest access You are free to walk on the dirt roads that run throughout the property. The Tremors filming location is a short half-mile walk. The trailhead to the Tuttle Creek Ashram is nearby and can be accessed by car or on foot. Other things to note ***Important: Screenshot directions on app in case you do not have reception when you arrive. Use Google Maps, not Apple Maps.*** The house is powered by solar and propane. There is no wifi. Cell reception is good. There is a large television and VCR/DVD player with plenty of options for entertainment. There is also a great selection of board games. Town (Lone Pine) is a 20-minute drive away; there are no stores close by, so make sure to pack thoroughly. The weather also tends to be ten degrees coooler than what is forecast for Lone Pine.
