Private Waterfront Redwood Cottage on Harbor Near Acadia (Schoodic Point)
Our redwood cottage is a wonderful house perched on the ledges above Birch Harbor. It has gorgeous views and has plenty of wonderful blueberries for picking. You can watch the tides from the kitchen table and see the humming birds flit past the windows. It is private, the last house on the road, surrounded by trees and has a wrap-around deck for taking in the quintessential views of Maine. It is located 5 minutes from Winter Harbor and the Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia National Park. The property extends down to the water 100 feet away and it is possible to launch small boats, kayaks, or canoes right from the rocks below the house. The large combined living/dining area provides a great place to gather for meals or with friends. Natural tide pools on the shore provide a great temporary home for crabs and starfish before the tide comes back in. There is even a bald eagle that sometimes perches in the trees in front of the house. Well behaved pets are always welcome. Schoodic Point: Acadia National Park: The cottage is only a few minutes from Schoodic Point, a beautiful part of Acadia National Park. There are picnic areas, a dock where you can fish or look for sand dollars, and hiking trails. Biking is also great around this area. It is far less populated than the Bar Harbor area and is very relaxing. A canoe/kayak/bike rental place is just 5 minutes away and they also repair bikes if you run into trouble with yours. The cottage waterfront...: The house overlooks Birch Harbor, a small sheltered harbor with a few lobster boats and lots of scenery. Walks along the water are wonderful with the rocks and seaweed making for classic Maine views. The tidal range is about 6-8 feet here so there is always something new to see in the ever-changing landscape. Carry-in boat access is available right from shore - perfect for kayaks or canoes. The blueberry picking is excellent on the ledges around the cottage - perfect for muffins or just eating them plain! Our Family: My aunt originally built this cottage on Birch Harbor back in the mid 1960s. The redwood construction has been perfect for a Maine getaway. She was a snow bird - spending winters in Florida and her summers in Maine at the cottage. She loved the blueberries and would make us fresh muffins whenever we visited as kids. We would take trips down to the docks and buy lobsters off the boat. It was at the cottage that we learned the wonders of the sea by collecting sea creature from the tidal flats and putting them in the tide pool - only to be washed away at the next tide. Her kindness has allowed us to keep visiting the cottage and now to share it with others. I hope you choose to stay at our little retreat and that you will come to love it as we do. Mobility Impaired Access - Several folks over the years have asked about access to the cottage for folks who have mobility issues. The driveway is gravel but not rutted in any way. There is a single ~8" step from the driveway and a single ~7" step into the house proper. There are steps on the other side of the deck but they are avoidable. The path to the water is informal and about 150ft to the water so the path would be more challenging for a mobility impaired person. We want you to have a wonderful time!
