Fleetwood (c. 1809) - A renovated landmark
Built in 1809 as a country home and renovated in 2019, Fleetwood is great balance of old-world charm and modern convenience located right in the middle of Nelson County's music, craft beer, and adventure destinations. Fleetwood sits atop a private bluff of solid rock overlooking the Tye River, with beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. When you visit you’ll feel that people have enjoyed this special spot for thousands of years. You will be staying in a neat old house on top of a private hill in the country with access to Hat Creek and the Tye River. Fleetwood is located on one of the most scenic stretches of the Tye River, which itself is regarded as one of the most scenic rivers in Virginia. The Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission notes of Fleetwood: it "has seen few one-story buildings having its architectural refinements...the joinery of the interior woodwork is especially fine." Fleetwood is located a mile off the "151 Brew Ridge Trail " and 25 minutes from Wintergreen ski resort. There are a ton of breweries, distilleries, cideries, wineries, and meaderies within a short drive (between 5 and 30 minutes). The Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, and George Washington National Forest are also nearby. Please note that this is an old house in the country. Some of the windows don’t open because they're over 200 years old. And despite our best efforts, there are ladybugs, stink bugs, co. always trying to take back their native habitat. You will hear coyotes nearby at night. There could be the occasional bear poking around. You will have access to the entire house, except for the small room off the master bedroom. This room has not been renovated yet and is sealed shut. The outbuilding in the backyard is for the owners' access only. We live fifteen minutes from Fleetwood and will be available to assist you promptly if any issues arise during your stay. Bored? Go for a hike and swim. Catch crawfish in the creek. Start a bonfire. Grill out on the back deck. Cozy up with a book next to the fireplace. The Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway are a beautiful 25 minutes away. There are excellent breweries, wineries, cideries, distilleries, restaurants, and music venues less than 15 minutes away. You are surrounded by fantastic biking, hiking, boating, fishing, and winter sports. The Wintergreen resort has skiing, boarding and tubing in the winter and awesome mountain bike trails the rest of the year. Bring four wheel drive if you’ve got it. Let us know your general itinerary and we’ll point you to the local grocers, trails, rivers and such. Fleetwood has the fastest possible Internet for the area, which should be fine for streaming Netflix etc. But folks used to extremely fast Internet should take note that it’s simply not possible in this area. Moreover, the number of people staying at home due to COVID has caused periodic bandwidth problems. Please contact us if you have issues and we will do our best to resolve them.
