Welcome to Montgomery Cabin. Completely remodeled in 2013, this jewel is tucked among the trees at the foothills of the lush Coastal Range. Bathe your senses in the sights and sounds of nature on the ¾ acre family friendly property landscaped with towering Rhodadendron cultivars and summer bloomers. Original art accents the open floor plan with cathedral ceilings on the main floor. Gaze toward the coast through a wall of windows as you cook up some local seafood in the well-appointed kitchen notable for honed granite counter tops, a Jenn-Air range and all new stainless appliances. Curl up beneath a chenille throw on one of the suede couches that frame the wood burning stove. Hard woods throughout! Indoor and outdoor activities abound here. You can do everything or nothing at all…. Begin your day collecting wild blackberries as you hike the old logging road behind the house. Explore tide pools and rock croppings at one of the many nearby beaches. Check out the Cape Mears lighthouse and lose yourself in breathtaking views of the rugged Oregon coast. Cast your line into any one of the surrounding rivers long heralded for the country’s best salmon fishing. Schedule a deep-sea charter from the Port of Garibaldi. There is even room here for you to park your own boat or RV. For a slower paced day, you might savor some local ice cream after a ride on the out and back steam train from Garibaldi to Rockaway Beach. Sample Oregon wine paired with fresh cheeses at the Blue Heron French Cheese Company or watch cheese makers ply their craft next door at the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Consider a drive north up Highway 101 to Cannon Beach to peruse galleries highlighting local artists. Don’t forget to stop at one of the many state parks along on your way. You can walk to the waterfront’s Pacific Seafood company for fresh fixings or dig your own clams in Garibaldi. End your day with a warm mug of hot cocoa while snuggled under and, on a clear night, take in a sky alight with stars. The large master suite is furnished with a king bed, mix of artistic lighting and an antique chest. Plenty of room for your gear and clothing in the great big walk-in closet. The main floor is also home to second bedroom which has a queen bed and bathroom across the hall. On the ground floor there is a second family room with flat screen TV and queen sized sleeper sofa with deluxe mattress. Down the hall is the third bedroom with a pair of lovely antique twin beds. Other things to note About the Montgomery House This house was built in 1982 by my great aunt and uncle, Adelheide “Ad” Meiners and George “Monty” Montgomery. The two met and married during the late 1940s in Portland, OR. Ad was a clerk for Montgomery Ward Department Stores and Monty was an engineer. They spent the next 30 years in Portland and bought a plot of land here in tiny Bay City in the late 1970s as the planned their retirement in a place they both felt was the best on earth. Both Ad and Monty were community activists and good neighbors. Ad was president of the Bay City Boosters and an active member of Friends of the Library. She was also instrumental in getting the Oregon Department of Transportation to drop the speed limit dropped to 45 mph on Highway 101 where it passes through Bay City. Monty was active as a master gardener and a lifetime member of the rural advocacy group, The Grange, which is based on “the strong and faithful tie of an agricultural fraternity, yet welcoming of all good moral character.” Ad played washboard for the Banjo Red & His Sidekicks, a music group that played regularly at the Lions Club and the Old Mill Marine in Garibaldi. Monty cultivated his rhododendron collection and worked with the Patterson Creek Pals, which helped to restore salmon fish runs and water quality. Ad and Monty were married for 57 years. Monty died of colon cancer on August 11, 2007 at the age of 89. And after 101 happy years, Ad died of old age on March 12, 2013. Ad was sharp as a tack until the died. The night before she died she told me, “Whatever you do, don’t put me in the same hole as Monty! I need my own space!” She credited her good health to two gin & tonics daily, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and the clean coastal Oregon air.
