Petreas Castle

Description

Petrea Castle belongs to the castle's complex Troupaki-Mourtzinou of Upper Kardamili in Messinian Mani. Built in the early 18th century, recently restored on plans by Greek Ministry of Culture, preserving with respect its historic and architectural character. It has three floors with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen. Unique view to Messinian bay and mountain Taygetos. The property offers air-conditioning system with heating pumps for heat and cold. The space Upper Kardamili is the place that hosts one of the most spectacular fortification complexes of Mani, being the home of the Troupaki-Mourtzinos family, a prominent family that gave high ranking officers to the revolutionary army in 1821. Originator of the family was Michael Palaiologos, who lived in the area at the end of the 17th century and his descendant was the chieftain Panagiotis Troupakis-Mourtzinos, a member of the Filiki Etaireia and one of the most important fighters of Greek independence. This was the place where Theodoros Kolokotronis hosted the preparation of the Greek Revolution where, with the help of Mourtzinos and his Maniates warriors, he liberated the city of Kalamata on 23rd March and gave the first victorious battle at Karytaina. The stone built settlement is located in Upper Kardamili and incorporates the tower houses of the Troupaki-Mourtzinou, Petrea, Bahleba and Boukouvala families. Inside the complex is the family church of Agios Spyridonas, with the impressive bell tower and the family's graves. The castle is the oldest building in the complex and it was a residence, a barracks, a storehouse and a watchtower. Nowadays, after an exemplary renovation under the guidance of the Greek Ministry of Culture in order to preserve all its historical and architectural features, the castle is a real landmark for the region. With its stone and wooden stairs, as well as precious family heirlooms to decorate its premises, it offers the visitor a special travel experience, as well as an insider's look at Greek history. The unobstructed view of the Messinian bay and mountain Taygetos, where one can see a carved pyramid on the highest peak, is another feature of the tower. Walkers can explore the area through a network of trails and discover the gorge of Viros, while in a short distance there are beautiful beaches with sand or pebbles, accessible by car. The center of Kardamili is 500 meters away and the visitor can find every kind of shop for their daily needs such as supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, car rental offices etc. The distance from Kalamata is 37 km and from Athens 238 km. The house is fully equipped for guests' stay, has air conditioning system with heating pumps for heat and cold, plasma TV and wifi. All bedrooms have extra ceiling fans.
