Petrea Castle belongs to the castle's complex Troupaki-Mourtzinou of Upper Kardamili in Messinian Mani. Built in the early 18th century, recently restored on plans by Greek Ministry of Culture, preserving with respect its historic and architectural character. This was the place where Theodoros Kolokotronis hosted the preparation of the Greek Revolution where, with the help of Mourtzinos and his Maniates warriors, he liberated the city of Kalamata on 23rd March and gave the first victorious battle at Karytaina. The stone built settlement is located in Upper Kardamili and incorporates the tower houses of the Troupaki-Mourtzinou, Petrea, Bahleba and Boukouvala families. Inside the complex is the family church of Agios Spyridonas, with the impressive bell tower and the family's graves. The castle is the oldest building in the complex and it was a residence, a barracks, a storehouse and a watchtower.
