Other things to note Lewis Smith Lake is a man made lake that has a ever changing water table. Alabama Power controls the water depth to best handle the dams needs at any given time. It’s imperative to note when reviewing any property on Lewis Smith Lake that you inquire about the average water depth at a residents dock for dates your looking to reserve. Lewis Smith Lake has 3 types of water descriptions associated with water level at a properties shoreline. Deep water, year round water, seasonal water. There is a big difference between all 3 types of shoreline. Some might need your needs better than others depending on the season and your families personal needs. Each season offers a amazing view with the every changing shoreline. DEEP WATER: Traditionally means the water at the dock on average is (20-250 ft deep). A positive is you have deep water year round. A negative is possibly the amount of stairs, landings, steps it takes to get up/down to the dock and most likely the shoreline has a deep drop off. Deep water usually means main channel location with more boat traffic & large movement of the dock unless the property is located in a cove. YEAR ROUND WATER: Usually means the property has year round water year that is not always accessible from your dock. Positive you have a very gentle slope with a walk-in shore line & negative the water depth is changing seasonally depending on Alabama Power needs. Traditionally March to August the dock is floating and easily accessible water depth is (3-15) ft deep. September-December your dock is dry but your can walk out to the main channel with your kayaks or fishing poles. January & February depending on the amount of rain that fall & Alabama power needs you might have to boat, kayak, or swim out to your docks walkway. Most likely year round water is located in a channel, slew or cove. SEASONAL WATER: Means they have water March-July. They are located in the wetlands and possibly have a floating dock unless there is a drought or Alabama Power has needs & they lower the water table on the entire lake. The water depth changes through the seasons making the shoreline ever changing. Most likely seasonable water is in a slew or on a creek trail. The shoreline at Crooked Creek Retreat is 100ft wide with a gentle slope from the backyard to the lake. The shore line is walk-in and shaded perfect for sitting in beach chairs with your feet in the water. It’s safe for little ones who want to play in shallow water before the drop off begins. The optimal time to swim and enjoy Lewis Smith Lake at Crooked Creeks Retreat dock is from March to August. Spring & summer on the lake are fantastic. Starting mid August Alabama Power begins lowering lake levels. Fall though winter Crooked Creek Retreats dock is dry and sitting level on sand. You can walk a kayak out to the main channel from our shoreline or dock. Usually at the start of the new year the lake water begins to rise. Depending on the rainfall our dock walkway platform may not be accessible. During this time the dock is usable but you have to kayak or swim out to the dock or the docks walkway. During the fall & winter depending on weather and the rain fall you can fish, kayaker & shoreline comb or treasures. On average the docks in our area beginning to float Jan/Feb until school starts in August when Alabama Power starts lowering the lake for fall. Please note the changing water table on the lake is all in the hands of Alabama Power needs and control. At any given day they can raise the water table or lower it with or without notice.
