History and Location In 2008, Robert Smith purchased estate with his family and renamed it with his last name and consideration for the property’s “idyllic” surroundings and view of rollings mountains. Eventually, in 2017, Smith opening it for events and listed it various rental sites. By 2019 as guests remarked that they “loved” the property and liked the accommodating staff at the Castle. In 2020 Smith recreated Smithmore Castle to a fully operational hotel with a private restaurant offering high end cuisines. The location offers a private steep drive up English Knob. The 121-acre private mountain estate is found in the ranges of the Blue Ridge Mountains and was called a “perfect place” to establish an atmosphere for thematic weddings and photoshoots. The Castle first attracted a national spotlight after being featured in magazines, television and music videos. Amenities and Features Smithmore Castle takes up British Victorian Architecture with multiple worldly-themed rooms and a Spanish Lounge. It is also decorated with imported and hand crafted frescos that complete the European vibe in the Formal Dining Room. Giant Swarovski Chandelier located in the Great room along with crystal wall sconces are seen in the receiving foyer of the Castle Hotel and throughout. Smithmore Castle features over 15,000 Sq Ft with many rooms but offers only eight bedrooms for guests to rent. The Castle has caves on the property and offers Cave Tours, a Fire Pit and mountain biking. Cooking classes, Archery Lessons, Cave Tours, Etiquette Classes, Massages, Wine Tastings and more. The Decor is integrated into the Castle’s corresponding Renaissance Hotel theme. It also offers views of Mount Mitchell, Toy River Valley, Eastern Continental Divide and the blue Ridge Mountains. The Property also provides hiking trails dotted with Old English riddles leading the way to discover caves. Moreover, it also features a vintage Bar and a Lounge by a “massive” Three-story stone fireplace. The stay in the hotel also includes a private in-house 5-Star Executive Chef who will prepare the variety of gourmet meals served to guests during the stay. The Hotel also offered custom and curated stays for each guest, along with a Concierge team and Renowned Chef. It also has a total lodging occupancy of 20 guests and can host up to 100 guests for private fine dining events. It includes 11 bathrooms, smart TV’s, Coffee stations and a 3,000 sq ft Ballroom called Crown Hall. The Hall incorporates a commercial kitchen, brides powder room and separate commercial men’s and women’s restrooms. The hall was mainly developed for hosting weddings and receptions. Guests can also book weddings and other events at the Castle itself. Guest access Entire Castle minus the Kitchen and Servants Quarters. Other things to note Castle Information Each Guest Receives a 3-Course Dinner and Gourmet Breakfast for each night and day of the stay by our renowned in-house Chef. Expectations: Smithmore Castle is operated as a victorian house. Staff is trained in fine dining, continental standards of etiquette and the upmost care. We believe in tradition and regard proper mannerisms as the highest degree of respect. ​ Attire: Smithmore is a proud House and encourages guests to wear proper attire. Smithmore has a dress code for different times of the day in accordance with the glorious and respectful victorian days of past. Gentlemen must be dignified and are required to wear a jacket and tie for Dinner. Ladies are to wear dresses and conduct themselves ladylike during dinner service. (Jeans and sportswear are not permitted for either ladies or gentlemen, no hats are to be worn during dinner). For breakfast, Men are encouraged to attire themselves in smart-casual elegance, opting for collared shirts paired with tailored trousers. A well-fitted blazer or sports coat adds a touch of sophistication. Closed-toe shoes or loafers complete the ensemble. For women, a blend of sophistication and modesty is key. Choose tasteful blouses or tops paired with skirts or dress pants, ensuring a knee-length hemline. Closed-toe shoes or sandals with a modest heel are appropriate. Afternoon Tea or Lunch are semi formal, please dress smart. In all other areas of the estate such as Hiking, Archery, Fire Pit, Coop, or other outdoor activity guests are permitted to wear what they please. Private House: Smithmore Castle is a private house not a public business. Access to the property is strictly by reservation only. Non guests will not be allowed to enter the property. Additionally, guests with valid reservations may not arrive early but rather arrive promptly at the times you have previously selected on your booking. Food: All lodging guests receive a 3-Course Dinner and Gourmet Breakfast for each night and morning of the stay. Lunch is an additional cost and the menu changes seasonally. Smithmore Castle grows, harvests or butchers most everything on the property. Therefore, we do not freeze food. We encourage lodging guests to order lunch at the time of their booking to give our kitchen staff ample time to prepare. Children Dining Etiquette: Keeping with tradition, children under the age of 13 must dine 30 minutes prior to adults in a separate room. Children will have a menu designed appropriate. Guests who decide to bring children will need to speak to Concierge in order to make the appropriate and necessary reservation adjustments.
