L´ancienne Ecole dates back to the beginning of the 12th century as part of the original foundations of Rocamadour. Situated high up on the cliffs of the medieval village in the ancient Rue de La Mercerie, it housed merchants selling their wares to pilgrims visiting the holy shrine in the sanctuary of Rocamadour. In the last century it was a school house before being restored under private ownership. The space The space The property is within 150 meters of the sanctuary and the main walkway through the medieval village of Rocamadour. From here you are also centrally located in the region to visit many of the colourful historical towns, markets and sites in the area like Autoire, Carennac, La Roque Gageac, Saint Cirq Lapopie and Sarlat. These offer the remarkable history, architecture, culture and food of the region, and also vast tracks of forest and land for walking, hiking, biking. The nearby Lot and the Dordogne rivers are ideal for kayaking, swimming or just chilling out. Rocamadour itself is set in the Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park, which puts several trails across the Cause, forests and along the rivers at your doorstep. There are ancient caves to visit in Rocamadour, Padirac and Pech Merle, prehistoric sites and a variety of parks and interesting activities for families and children The space The two storey house, with a garden, clings to the cliffs with breathtaking views of the Alzou valley. Equipped with 4 bedrooms, 3 double beds, and including a bedroom with 2 single beds, it accommodates 4-8 people easily. The history of this house is apparent in the lower double bedroom dug directly into the cliff with the actual rockface forming part of the en-suite bathroom. A high volume ceiling spans the living area with a cozy fireplace. L´ancienne Ecole houses one of the only remaining original Roman windows in Rocamadour dating from its early days looking out high over the garden and valley. An open plan mezzanine kitchen and dining area offer modern amenities and an ideal area for dinner parties or just hanging. This is complemented by an outside dining area under the trees overlooking the valley for breakfast or those warm summer evenings with a BBQ grid and kettle grill in the garden. The house is equipped with wifi and two TVs. Guests are provided with towels (2 large towels and 1 small) as well as a set of bed linen.
