The Curlew is a bespoke, beautifully furnished, 1 bedroom Shepherd’s Hut, in a spectacular, get-away-from-it-all location with uninterrupted views of magnificent Kinder Scout – the highest fell in the Peak District. Nestled in a private wildflower paddock, at Hilltop Farm, your stay is in the quiet village of Mellor - a stone’s throw from the Derbyshire border and is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy magnificent scenery and walks galore. The space The cosy, Curlew has been craftsman built and has been lovingly furnished by its owners, with no expense spared, using designer fabrics, furnishings, fixtures and fittings throughout, to provide couples or solo guests, with a relaxing stay. The Curlew, is named after the endangered birds with the highly distinctive and evocative call, which can often be seen in the nearby meadow in season. The Curlew’s wonderful hilltop location provides guests with some of the finest views in the area. The Curlew is beautifully designed to maximise space and luxury, with a king Size bed, with 100% linen bedding, a comfy seating area with breakfast table and a bijou blacksmith-crafted, wood burning stove to keep guests cosy. The handmade fitted kitchen area features a Belfast sink, oak worktops, a fridge stocked with a essential starter supply of milk, eggs, and ice cubes. There is a microwave and a two-ring electric induction hob. The Curlew has all dinnerware, cutlery and essential utensils provided, and a welcome pack of locally ground coffee and tea bags. The stylish bathroom has a full-size shower, washbasin and sumptuously soft towels, plus a flushing toilet. Eco friendly hand soap and shower wash are provided for our guests. The Curlew also offers guests free Wi-Fi and a 4G signal for use throughout their minimum 2 night stay if you feel the need to connect with the outside world. Guest access Allocated parking for guests can be found on the gated driveway of Hilltop Farm. A few strides from the car, is your private entrance gate, with two steps down to a stone pathway, which leads directly to The Curlew, which stands on your attractive graveled terrace. Three solid oak steps take you to The Curlew’s stable door. There is are 2 outdoor storage boxes for walking shoes, wellies and ruck sacks. The Curlew’s guests have full private access to the pretty wildflower paddock that surrounds it. Choose from outdoor dining tables and chairs, wooden Lutyens bench, two Adirondack chairs, and there is use of a summer house if you want to be out of the sun, wind or rain! All provide a perfect place to while away an afternoon or evening listening, to the Curlew and Lapwing calls. A fire pit and portable BBQ are available if used with care. Other things to note The Curlew’s wonderful hilltop location provides guests with some of the finest views in the area. It’s a special moment to draw back the curtains and watch the magical spectacle of the sun rising over the fells, from the cosy comfort of the Curlew’s king-size bed with its silky-soft pure linen bedding. And it’s the perfect spot for a sundowner too, drinking in the views from the paddock gate, down the Goyt valley and out for over 90 miles across the Cheshire plain as far as the Welsh Hills, to watch the sun set in the West. Do as little or as much as you like while staying at The Curlew. Maybe you simply just want to escape, hunker down, relax and recharge, or perhaps explore the historic and beautiful local area, which is bursting with things to see and do. The Curlew is in a walker’s paradise, surrounded by a vast network of footpaths and bridle paths, providing moorland, woodland, countryside and canal walks from the door. The local area is steeped in history being at the heart of the industrial revolution and home to Samuel Oldknow’s 18th Century cotton mills powered by the fast-flowing rivers in the valleys surrounding Mellor. An array of local pubs offer a variety of eating opportunities, together with a deli, post office and tapas eatery in the nearby village of Marple Bridge and a selection of cafes and restaurants in the little town of New Mills 2 miles away. Two highly popular, local pubs are within a 10-15 minute stroll down the hill from The Curlew’s door. Historic St Thomas’ Church is a delightful short walk over the fields and apart from breathtaking views from the Churchyard towards Manchester and beyond, the Church has a pulpit that is nearly seven hundred years old and a font reported to be from the first Millennium. It sits within an ancient settlement featuring an Iron Age hillfort excavated by the Mellor Archaeological Trust. The National Trust’s Lyme Park is just 4 miles away and the Spa Town of Buxton is a 30-minute car ride in the other direction. Stunning Chatsworth House and Gardens are a scenic 27 miles drive away. For anyone looking to explore the restaurants, theatres and retail delights of Manchester, Marple Station (3 miles) has a direct line to Manchester Piccadilly which gets you to the city in approx. 25 minutes. Golfers can enjoy a game with tremendous views from nearby Mellor and Townscliffe or News Mills Golf Clubs. For experienced horse riders, the renowned, Tarden Farm Riding Stables is 5 minutes down the road. The Curlew is not suitable for children or pets, but offers discerning adult couples or solo guests, a tranquil, rural idyll in which to relax, with plenty to see and enjoy right on the doorstep.
