You will be surrounded by natural beauty. Beautiful country walks are at your doorstep. Some of the country's most beautiful villages are in Sussex. The fairytale villages boast historic stone cottages, cobbled streets and ancient castles and are surrounded by some of the most wonderful English scenery. Only a 10 minute walk away sits one of the prettiest villages of them all - Lindfield - which is well known for its quintessentially English appearance. The village was banned from entering a competition called the 'Best Kept Village in Sussex.’ It won the competition so often that it was decided to give other places in Sussex a chance to win. With rural landscape, historic homes and a pretty duck pond, this area within West Sussex is not to be missed. There are houses from many different periods in this Sussex village: medieval cottages, Georgian manor houses and detached arts and crafts-style properties. Lindfield was named one of the best places to live in the UK by 'The Times' calling it a "dream escape to the country”. There is a high street bustling with locals, lined with pretty boutiques and plenty of coffee shops. There is a Grade II listed church called All Saints which sits on top of the hill and dates back to the 11th century. The duck pond is a particular highlight within the West Sussex countryside. The ducks have two small brick islands on which to nest and locals are fundraising to build a floating duck house for the lucky animals. Visit the Bent Arms, a cosy pub, or join in the fun at the Stand Up Inn. Locals love to play toad in the hole - a pastime that involves throwing pennies into a lead-covered box with a hole in it. There are a number of other delicious options including: The Snowdrop (in Walstead), The Witch Inn, The Limes (serving renowned Thai food), That's Amore (Italian) and Tamasha, a contemporary curry house which has live tribute music once a month. Other nearby award-winning pubs and restaurants are: The Rose & Crown (Horsted Keynes); The Coach and Horses (Danehill); The Cat Inn (West Hoathly). In the morning, if you wish to buy local produce, visit Cottenham’s butchers or Paul’s greengrocers. The best and oldest bakery in the South East is only an 8 minute drive away in Ardingly. Fellow is family run bakery and began in the 1880s and here you will find artisan bread, hot savoury pies and the most delicious cakes plus local honey, jam, marmalades etc. Five minutes from Lindfield is Haywards Heath town where you will find banks, supermarkets (Waitrose, M&S, Sainsburys) and many shops and eating places. The railway station provides a direct line to London. Take a train to London Bridge (44 minutes), to London Victoria (45 minutes), to Brighton (14 minutes), to Gatwick Airport (11 minutes). The beautiful south coast beaches are just a 30 minute drive away and the 100 mile long South Downs Way are only a 20 minute drive away. Try the coffee and cake or the hot sausage rolls at the lovely converted horse box up on the Downs at the Jack and Jill Windmills or one of the lovely country pubs. One of my favourites is the Black Horse in Nuthurst (25 minutes drive). Visit Crabtree, a tiny hamlet near Horsham. It is home to only a handful of people yet it has some of the finest dining in Sussex. It is fortunate enough to have not one but two Michelin restaurants. Crabtree is perhaps most famous for its namesake pub, The Crabtree, which attracts people from all over the county. Nestled deep inside the historic woodland is another top restaurant - Interlude. You can explore the High Weald - Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) - one of the best surviving medieval landscapes in Northern Europe. Mysterious ancient woodland and fern-clad streams; intriguing timber-framed buildings; sunken lanes created by Saxon drovers and Tudor iron masters; and the South East's largest heathland Ashdown Forest. The 1461 square kilometre area covers parts of Kent, Sussex and Surrey. Four National Trust locations are nearby: Sheffield Park, Wakehurst, Nymans and Standen. There are many local attractions including: the Bluebell Railway (which still runs a vintage steam trains throughout the area); the Bluebell Vineyard, Glyndebourne Opera House, Borde Hill Gardens, the South of England Showground, Hickstead Showground. You may like to visit the famous roots of Winnie-The-Pooh in the quaint village of Hartfield.
