Other things to note Besides the beach there is a marina and further on (400 meters, ¼ mile) the picturesque settlement of Ormos Marathokampos where there is a super market, taverns, cafeteria, pizzeria, hairdresser etc., as well as a fishing port where in the early hours you can find fresh fish right off the boat. You have the opportunity to escape to nearby beaches, archaeological sites and other attractions that can be found in the area and on the island in general, since the longest distance from one side of the island to the other is just 43 km (27 miles). You can also take day trips to the nearest islands such as the historic island of Patmos (where the book or revelations, or Apocalypse, was written) and the spectacular archipelago of Fournoi, or even Ikaria (named after the legendary Icarus) and Kusadasi in Turkey (with organized excursions to the ruins of the historic city of Ephesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
