Description

Our home is less than a mile to UFHealth at Shands and the Malcom Randall Veterans Medical Center. We are a mile to the University of Florida campus. Amazingly, also a short bike ride (1-2 miles) to Downtown Gainesville. Close to Depot Park, art studios, restaurants, music venues, and theater. Nature parks close too. The bonus is we live on 2 acres, tucked back in a quiet neighborhood. Our pool is deep & cool; we have bikes to borrow. The container is perfect for a solo traveler, or a couple. The space Space is 400 square feet and open, loft style. There is a toilet, sink, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, electric tea kettle, a toaster oven and basic kitchen supplies, but NO STOVE OR OVEN. The shower is a private, OUTDOOR SHOWER, with instant hot water, 25 ft from the door. The container is next to our home but private. The toilet is tucked subtly around the corner but within the overall space and separated by a curtain, not a door (so folks need to be “comfortable” with each other). There are two porches for sitting outside and enjoying the view. We often have great blue heron, whistling ducks, turtles, and egrets in the pond. Occasionally we have an otter or gator that decides to make a home here too. The pool was built in 1960 and is quite deep and cool. We sit on two acres in one of the oldest Gainesville neighborhoods. Guest access You have access to the yard (2 acres), the pool, ping pong table in the carport. A washer and dryer are available for longer stays. There are bikes to borrow; please let us know what you need in advance for biking (lights, helmet, cruiser or off-road). The container will be unlocked when you arrive. You can park in front of the container. Help yourself to grapefruit, peaches, figs, or any other edibles in our yard! Other things to note Some additional info we hope will be helpful: La Caja is located in a North Florida swampland: even though it is close to downtown, restaurants, and many local attractions, our property is extremely verdant and rich with wildlife. In addition to a great variety of lovely songbirds, you may see or hear hawks, owls, squiirels, deer, possum, raccoons, otters, armadillos (they sometimes root around, clunking against the container at night), a medium-sized alligator in the back pond, and the very occassional black bear—Peter once found one swimming in the pool 🥹. This being said, mosquitoes can be intense, especially in August-September at dawn and dusk. We provide insect repellant and citronella candles. This may or may not be sufficient protection for you. Please take precautions to ensure your comfort and protect your health. We also are rather infamous for Palmetto bugs (1-2” long flying roaches) and a wide variety of spiders. You won’t find wildlife inside the container (unless you leave unscreened doors open—please avoid that! 😉🤓), and we do have a regular service to deter bugs setting up housekeeping. You will, however, most certainly encounter many forms of beyond-human-life when you are outside on the grounds, and your shower is an outdoor shower. If you are unfamiliar with the vitality of Florida swampland, you may want to do a bit of research to ensure you will be happy here. If a stay at La Caja is for you, you will know it. Guests who love their stay at La Caja experience this place as we do—a gentle wilderness filled with beauty, peace, and magic.
