Located 18 minutes (10.9 miles) to Pittsburg, Kansas Crossing Casino 11 minutes (6.3 miles), Downstream Casino 38 minutes (31.8 miles) Pittsburg State University 14 minutes (9.4 miles), Joplin, MO 37 minutes (29 miles). Space is intentionally furnished with worn leather furniture to suit riding lifestyle. Being a horse lover as a girl I always wanted to live in the barn with my horses. My dad and I, along with friends and family, built this place which I occupied as I was building my house on the property. I still love hanging out here with my horses and friends. My favorite place is the screened porch; sit here and you will more than likely spot deer, turkey or possibly a coyote or bobcat. The private fire pit outside of the screened porch is perfect for nights of stargazing; wood is provided free of charge. Outside of hunting season walking trails may be open for guests but be sure to use bug spray as chiggers, oak mites and ticks are prevalent (inquire for trail use at time of booking if interested). Pack a picnic (basket on top of refrigerator) and walk to the dock where you will have a great view of the farm (no fishing allowed on farm but there is a prevalence of public strip pit fishing nearby) Linens, dishes, shampoo, soap, laundry soap, bottled water, coffee and tea furnished. If you forget something (toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, etc) no worries as I more than likely have an extra on hand as I frequently entertain friends and family who stay for extended visits and am always prepared. Leather furniture is well worn for the Ralph Lauren lived in look. This is where my friends and I congregate after riding for drinks and conversation. Magazines, books and videos are stocked for guest use. If you like the outdoors you will surely enjoy your stay. Well behaved pets are welcome if kept on leash at all times when outdoors and away from horses, barn cats and Guinnea hens on property. Horses are known to chase and stomp dogs and coyotes are a threat for small dogs. Children under 14 are not allowed (no exceptions). Multiple guests have requested to ride horses during their stay. This is not an option so please save the trouble of inquiring. Access to apartment, screened porch and fenced yard area outside screened porch with fire pit. Ample parking in front of barn. Stable area, loft and areas containing horses off limits to guests. Property is secured with gate at entrance; automatic opener will be provided to guest for use during stay. It’s always a pleasure meeting guests but I understand some just want to get away and have complete privacy. Some guests I never meet and others have been very interactive. My house is a social hub for friends and family and I frequently entertain but the barn is far enough away for you to have complete privacy. Hilltop property is located on gravel county road (1/2 mile from paved road) and surrounded by trees and pasture. Pittsburg a is short drive 12-15 minutes with a variety of restaurants, grocery stores, movie theatre. This quaint college town boasts a history in mining which has yielded multiple strip pits in the area open to the public for fishing. No public transportation Although next door to my house Location is remote and surrounded by trees. I feed horses in the morning between 7 and 8 am. I do my best to not disturb guests. If you are afraid of the outdoors, animals or darkness this is not the place for you. Being outside of city limits it gets very dark at night on the property which consequently is perfect for stargazing. I have had friends accustomed to the city who were frightened of the extreme darkness, night time sounds and remote location. Wildlife is prevalent and you may hear wildlife noises at night including occasional raccoons in the loft area above the apartment. Coyotes, groundhogs, turkey, raccoons, snakes, skunks and possums have all been spotted near or in the barn. Also keep in mind this is a farm. There is dust and horses with accompanying smells and flies inside horse paddock and stalls. This does not affect interior of apartment but pending weather conditions could affect if you are on screened porch. Birds chirp loudly in the morning, coyotes howl at night, frogs and crickets sing spring through fall in the evening and if you are lucky you will hear one of the owls on the property. You may also hear the neighbors cows mooing. Country life can be noisy but it’s the best kind of noise. I am pointing this out as city friends have been surprised at the variety of noises on the farm. Several restaurants close by including Pichler’s Chicken Annie’s and the Kansas Crossing Casino which has a decent restaurant as well. Southeast Kansas is Famous for their Fried Chicken. There is Chicken Annies Orginal, Chicken Annies Girard, Picklers Chicken Annies 10 minutes from the farm ( all related but seperate businesses), Chicken Mary's, Gebhardts and Barto's. Chicken Annies Orginal and Chicken Mary's were featured on the Food Network's show "Food Wars". Barto’s has a live band and dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. Pittsburg has a Starbucks, several local coffee houses and a variety of restaurants which are a short drive from the apartment.
