The road is paved along its entire length, so you can rent any car you want. You just have to be careful, as you will go through a mountain with many turns. The distance from Chania airport is 100 km, approximately 2 hours by car, while from Heraklion airport 170 km, i.e. approximately 3.5 hours by car.
