Riverfront Cabin on the Brule · Boxcar Hole
Riverfront Cabin on the Brule · Boxcar Hole
Description
There's a bend in the Brule River called Boxcar Hole — a designated Wisconsin DNR fish refuge where fish congregate in protected waters. Locals know it. Fly fishers dream about it. And this cabin sits right on it — log walls, wood stove crackling, knotty pine everywhere. The Brule is Wisconsin's most famous trout river, and you'll have direct access from the backyard. Three bedrooms, full kitchen, fire pit by the river. Come for the fishing. Stay for the quiet. Leave planning your return. The space **The Cabin** Built from log and cedar, the Brule River Cabin sits on a large wooded parcel right on the riverbank at Boxcar Hole. Inside: knotty pine walls, a wood-burning fireplace, and the kind of warmth that only real wood cabins have. The main floor has a full kitchen, dining area, and living room. Two king bedrooms downstairs, a loft with three twin beds upstairs — plenty of room to spread out. **The River** You have direct water access — walk out the back door, down the stairs with railings, and you're on the Brule. Boxcar Hole is a designated Wisconsin DNR fish refuge — fishing is closed July 15 – October 31, but outside that window it's exceptional precisely because the fish concentrate in protected waters. The Brule is famous for trout, steelhead, and salmon. A valid Wisconsin fishing license is required. Canoe and kayak rentals are available through Brule River Canoe Rental right in town. **The Grounds** Fire pit on the riverbank — firewood provided. Covered front porch with Adirondack chairs. Gazebo by the water. Stone patio overlooking the river. Large private backyard backing up to the river with views of the bend. Surrounded by mature spruce, birch, and pine — feels remote, but minutes from town. The wildlife here is part of the experience — the property is home to a large resident deer herd, many of them tame enough to hand-feed. **Nearby** The Brule Barn Wedding and Event Center is close by — we regularly host wedding parties and event guests. Twin Gables restaurant is the local go-to. The Kro Bar & Grill has been a Brule staple for 50 years — great food, cold drinks, and the kind of place where everyone knows your name. Lake Superior is about 20 minutes north. Guest access You'll have direct access to the water from the cabin. There are stairs with railings leading the river. Other things to note **Getting to the cabin:** The cabin is on Hwy H (paved) with a gravel driveway. GPS works well; use the address provided in your booking confirmation. **Parking:** Large gravel driveway — plenty of room for multiple cars, snowmobile trailers, and ATV trailers. **The river:** Direct access via stairs with railings. The Brule has a current — supervise kids closely. Life jackets are not provided. The water is cold even in summer. **Cell service:** AT&T works pretty well. Other carriers can be spotty. WiFi is high-speed and reliable. **Wood stove & fire pit:** Both available for use. Firewood is provided free of charge. **Pets:** No pets allowed. The property borders active wildlife habitat — loose dogs can encounter traps, poison, or disturb nearby hunters. We also have a large tame deer herd on the property that we want to protect. Service animals are accommodated as required by law. **Fishing at Boxcar Hole:** The cabin sits on Boxcar Hole, a designated Wisconsin DNR fish refuge on the Brule River. Fishing is CLOSED at Boxcar Hole from July 15 – October 31. Outside that window, it's some of the best fishing on the river — the refuge designation means fish concentrate here. A valid Wisconsin fishing license is required. Check current regulations at dnr wisconsin gov before your trip. **Bugs & wildlife:** It's the northwoods. Bring bug spray in summer. Eagles, the occasional bear, and a large resident deer herd are part of the scenery. **The deer:** The property has an unusually large resident deer population. They're accustomed to people and some will eat right from your hand. Try a slice of white bread — it's a guest favorite, especially with kids. Don't be surprised if you wake up to a dozen of them in the yard. **Bears:** Yes, we have them. They're part of living on the Brule. Do NOT leave food, coolers, or garbage outside or on the porch — bears will find it. All trash goes in the bear-proof dumpster with the latch (we'll show you where). Keep the grill clean after use. They're not aggressive, but a fed bear is a problem bear. Respect the wildlife and they'll keep their distance. **Winter stays:** Fully heated (central heat + wood stove). Driveway gets plowed timely. It can get slippery and muddy in the spring — plan accordingly. **Quiet:** This is a genuinely quiet, rural setting. No nearby nightlife. That's the point.
