Guided Flyfishing - Zichichi Family farm is excited to work with Phil Sheffield to offer flyfishing lessons as part of your stay. Phil has been passionate about fly fishing for over 62 years, and our property is uniquely situated to provide a amazing teaching enviroment.  A Stonington native for all of his life, he has fished everywhere one can imagine in the state of CT and beyond.  He is retired but is currently a certified seasonal casting instructor for LL Bean and lives on Mason’s Island in Mystic Ct.  His passion at this point in his life is teaching the fine art of angling with a fly in both fresh and saltwater…..patiently.   He is on the Pro Staff of Mike Wade’s Watch Hill Outfitters in Westerly, RI and is a licensed and insured guide.  Phil will be offering 1-2 hour personal casting and angling lessons as part of your stay. These lessons vary based on the allotted time and skill level, but will include lawn casting, and still water casting on our stocked pond.  He can also teach all the aspects entailing fly rod and line choices with guided fishing lessons.  How to hook and play large trout and safely release then unharmed.  Fly choices and the proper leaders and tippet plus knots to tie.  You will leave our farm well educated to advance your knowledge of fly casting and fishing in still water and moving water situations.  Euro nymphing, wet fly swing, dry fly presentation, streamers  and how to fish them.  Also a quick study in entomology for matching hatches.  Phil is also an avid fly tyer and can also get you started on that path which can be a  rewarding, full circle fly fishing experience.  We will have fly rods and reels available for a rental fee or you can bring your own.  Four, five or six weight outfits with matching floating lines are preferred. Cost is $60 dollars per student for 1 a hour lesson and $200 per student for a 2 hour lesson. Proceeds from your flyfishing guided experience at the farm go back into our fishing infrastructure in order to maintain our natural habitat and teach the next generation of fly fisherman. Campfire- You are always welcome to collect your own wood from downed trees and branches at the property (or the wood pile next to the fire pit) and build your own reasonably sized campfire in our fire pit by the cabin, but if you are unsure of yourself or pressed for time, we can have your camp fire setup, lit at an agreed upon time and if you choose we can come back and put it out for you. Once the fire is lit you must tend to it till you put it out, or till we come back at an agreed upon time to put it out. All campfires are weather dependent; $25 payable at the farm (cash or check). Wood is provided for your convenience, and for the protection of our property and forest, please do not bring wood from locations outside of our property for campfires or heat. Wood for the wood stove is free of charge as a winter heating option. As a rule we do not allow pets, but well behaved highly trained pets can be accommodated, they must be well socialized with lots of animals, and we must know about in advance so we can talk about options and expectations.  Dogs must be crate trained and in the crate when in the cabin and picked up after on road, trail or fields. Your dog must be under your control at all times, leashed, remote trainer, or verbal (if he or she can be verbally or signaled downed at a distance this is a good indication of our expectations). This is for the dogs protection as well as our animals. We have lots of animals inside of electric fencing and a livestock guard dog... If your pet has not ever seen electric fence, he will likely have an interaction with it at some point. Please be sure to contact us in advance. The Caretaker's Log Cabin, Yawbux Brook, 3 miles of private trails on the property, large fire pit, picnic table, shed, pond (with prior arrangements), located near Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, the CT Blue Trail, local vineyards and wineries (Johnathon Edwards Winery), Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, Misquamicut Beach, Yawgoo Skiing, tubing and waterpark. A lock box with the keys will be on the cabin. The combination will be give the day before your arrival. Situated in Yawbux Valley, our farm is located in a tight knit community where we all know each other. Please be respectful of our property and their privacy. You never know who you will meet. Uber! With Foxwoods so close, it's only a $10 ride away... Westerly is usually about $18 and Mystic only $25... Even the Providence Airport is usually less than $50. And if you want the security of a guaranteed departure time, cab or rental car companies. Pets and special events can happen but you will need to contact us for clear rules and pricing. Hiking, mountain biking, sledding, fishing (local laws apply), and cross country skiing on the property. Our heat to the cabin is either propane stove (controlled via thermostat on the wall) or wood stove, both are large cast iron stoves that get hot to the touch. Most everyone loves them but for some folks with younger children this has been a concern. You can see the setup of both in the photos. **** Our insurance requires the signing of a rental agreement and release of liability for use of the farm.
