Harry's Cabin - Overlooking Lake Victoria

Harry's Cabin is a beautifully designed house perched high on a hill with wide views of Lake Victoria and the source of the river Nile in the distance. It's unique location allows for both sunrise and sunset to be enjoyed from the covered terrace or anywhere on the lush property grounds. Rain & well water for your dishes, solar power for light, a rooster for your alarm clock, this lovely spot has a way of making you slow down and appreciate the little things. The space Harry's Cabin sits among mango and towering indigenous trees, offering a quiet, private stay. It includes an open air rainfall shower, full kitchen, a cozy mezzanine and a covered veranda with sweeping views of the lake and Jinja city beyond. The fenced compound is shared with a second listing - Harry's Retreat (3br). Check-in is ideally before 7 pm to avoid driving in the dark. Check-out is 10 am. Late check-out may be possible - just ask. Guest access The cabin sits at the top of a steep rural hill, about 2 km from the tarmac road. The track is rocky and uneven, especially after rain, but most cars make it up fine if the driver takes it slow and steady. We recommend a 4WD if you have one, and definitely arriving in daylight your first time. The drive up can be rather exciting (or perhaps a little nerve racking) if you're not used to rural roads here. We work with the local council and neighbors to keep the road in shape where possible, but maintenance is limited. Please call ahead before setting out so we can send a boda guide (at our cost) to meet you and lead you up - it saves time and confusion. Google Maps can be misleading. Note on access to food/supermarkets: While the Cabin is a 25-30 minute drive from Jinja town we strongly recommend that you pick up supplies before you arrive. The Cabin is stocked with the basics (oil, salt, sugar, tea/coffee, basic spices), but best to stock up before you arrive to save you a trip into town. There is in compound parking and a permanent security guard (as well as three dogs) to keep you safe. Other things to note Note on Power/Electricity: Harry's Cabin is completely off the grid and is powered by the sun. Please note that hairdryers, flat irons and other high watt electronics (ie electric kettles, hair curlers etc) cannot be supported on our current system - we ask that you do not use them for fear of frying our solar batteries. Note on Water: Our water is sourced from a hand dug 90ft well and the Cabin is fitted with a UV triple filter water purification system fit for drinking. Between the solar power & the need to pump water intermittently, you may experience mini power & water outages during your stay - though these shouldn't last more that 30-40 minutes at a time. Note on Privacy: The Cabin as an open plan cabin- so while we have set up curtains around the bedroom & bathroom and living room area, the kitchen and front doors are curtain free to allow light & the lovely views to stream in. The Cabin is situated about 20 meters from the guard's house, and from our second listing - Harry's Retreat, but surrounded by thick vegetation to offer an extra layer of privacy. Note on Cooking Gas: The kitchen is fitted with a gas oven supplied by a gas canister. Please let us know if the canister happens to run out during your stay and we'll come and swap it in for a new one.
