Stay in a maticulously restored classic California bungalow in the heart of the South Redlands Historic District. It is within walking distance from downtown and all the major historical sites and parks, and a short drive to ESRI, Loma Linda University, and the University of Redlands. It is about a 25 minute drive to the University of California at Riverside. We are offering what was our home for 34 years for short term rentals. We are currently offering for your exclusive possession the lower floor of the house only, which is approximately 1800 square feet (not including porches) consisting of a fully furnished living room, formal dining room, kitchen with all appliances, including a dishwasher, service porch with washer and dryer, three large bedrooms - two with large walk in closets and sinks (unusual for the period) and two bathrooms, one with a large tile tub en suite to the master bedroom, the main bath with shower. The master bedroom has a comfortable king size bed and the second a comfortable queen. The study/ bedroom 3 has a comfortable queen size bed and free standing armoire. The front of the house has a wrap around porch and there is an additional deck at the rear of the house. The second floor is accessed through a stairway behind a locked hall door. The second floor is not occupied. The back yard is fully fenced leading to a rear carport and shed. I currently live only seven houses up the street and will personally greet guests and do everything in my power to make them comfortable. No one will be occupying the house with you. The House is known locally as the Baughman (pronounced "Boffman") residence, and was built in 1910 by Redlands pioneers Charles and Emily Baughman on the then newly created Alvarado Street (named after the 24th Governor of California, Juan Bautista Alvarado, while California was under the sovereignty of Mexico) in the center of what was then an orange grove. Other homes soon followed, and the 500 block of Alvarado Street now consists entirely of well maintained and restored houses from the arts and crafts period. It is located on one of the two most desirable streets on the Redlands south side historic district - Alvarado and its neighboring street Buena Vista. The house was the home of Charles Williams, a Mayor of Redlands and the Treasurer Tax Collector for the County, and was the childhood home of internationally known political author, journalist and correspondent James Fallows. The house has been awarded the Redlands Heritage Award by the Redlands Area Historical Society - given to those houses of significant historical significance and restored and maintained in their original condition. It was recently featured as an example of sensitive restoration and original features on the pilot for the home improvement channel series "Restored." The neighborhood is quite safe and the house is extremely quiet. If you wish to learn more about the history of the house and of the City of Redlands, you are encouraged to Google "Redlands Timelines" and download the "RAHS Explorer" app. for your smartphone. Both were created by the local mapping company ESRI in collaboration with the Redlands Area Historical Society. They both employ GPS technology to allow you to tour Redlands on foot or by car, click on the address of the historical structure (including this house), and pull up a photo and description of the history of the house or structure and its former and present occupants. The ESRI campus is about 6 blocks away. Loma Linda University Medical Center is about a 10 minute drive, as is the University of Redlands - we are right in between the two. Oak Glen and Forrest Falls are each about 20 minutes away. The house is 15 minutes by car from the San Bernardino Metrolink station and 30 minutes from Ontario Airport. It is 30 minutes to Lake Arrowhead and 50 minutes to Big Bear Lake. It is a 1 hour non-rush hour drive to downtown Los Angeles and 1 ½ hour Metrolink train trip from the San Bernardino Station to Union Station in Los Angeles, where trains and metro services are available to all parts of Los Angeles, including Universal Studios, Hollywood Boulevard, and the beach in Santa Monica, as well as a flyaway bus to LAX. It is about an hour plus non-rush hour drive to Disneyland and to Newport Beach, and a 2 hour drive to San Diego. It is a 40 minute very easy drive to downtown Palm Springs, and we frequently commute there for dinner. It is about an hour and a quarter drive to the Indio Polo Field, the site of the Coachella Music Festival and about 25 minutes to the Glen Helen Amphitheater grounds, the site of Ozzfest and other concerts. SELF CHECK IN: We try to personally greet all of our guests, but in the event we are delayed or otherwise occupied, or you arrive very late at night, you will be able to enter in our absence as follows: Please drive down the driveway to the right of the house and park in the carport to the rear. The gate will be open. You can then enter through the rear door using the keypad lock which will be programmed to the last four digits of your cell phone number. HEAT AND AIR: The thermostat for the heating and air is located in the dining room. Just flip the switch on the right to “heat" or “cool” and then adjust the temperature up or down with the arrows on the left. We request that you put the switch in the “off" position when you are away. It is a large 5 ton HiVAC system, and heats and cools very rapidly. WIFI INFO will be provided after booking. IRONING BOARD: There is a built-in pull down Ironing board in the kitchen. The iron is in the low cabinet just to the left of the ironing board. There is a modern standard ironing board in the closet in the middle bedroom. Bleach is not provided. GRILL ON STOVETOP: Please do not use the grill on the stovetop. It is made of 77 year old chrome and food burns rather than cooks on it. It is a 2 hour job to clean it after use. We provide plenty of pans with non-stick surfaces that work much better and clean up much easier. Check in is after 3:00 pm If you arrive earlier just let us know. If we can accommodate an early check in we will make every effort to do so. Check out is 10:00 am DEPARTURE: TAKE OUT TRASH: Upon departure we ask that you empty all the waste baskets in the house and place the refuse in one of the two trash cans in the kitchen (regular and recycle) and deposit those in the rolling trash cans to the right of the shed in the back of the house. TOWELS IN HAMPERS: Please place all used towels in the hampers on the back porch. LINENS: Please leave used beds unmade. The washer and dryer are for your personal items. Soap is in the cabinet across from the washer. We do not provide bleach. DISHES AND UTENSILS : During the course of your stay and up to the night before your departure, PLEASE WASH ALL GLASSWARE, UTENSILS, DISHES AND PANS IN THE DISHWASHER and return them to the places were you found them. Please scrub excess food or burned food off of the pans before placing them in the dishwasher. The dishwasher tabs are in the door below the sink and you need only press the “start" to run the dishwasher. Before running the dishwasher, turn the sink faucet to hot (straight up) and run the water until it is hot, then turn it off and start the dishwasher. If you use dishes, pans or utensils the morning of your departure, please place them in the dishwasher and start the cycle before you leave. Dan and Steve
