The space History Tylissos is a small village, situated on the northeast slope of mount Psiloritis, 13 km southwest of Heraklion. One of the few settlements in Greece retaining its ancient name over almost 4000 years, Tylissos combines archaeological interest and authentic Cretan hospitality and culture. Its history begins in the Early Minoan II (2600-2300 bc) as an ancient sanctuary and Minoan city, continues over the Venetian occupation of Crete, and resurfaces as a historical and archaeological location through the archaeological excavations of Joseph Hadzidakis in the early 20th century. The archaeological site is a hidden jewel surrounded by tall cypress trees and lush vineries gathering around traditional Cretan stone houses. Location Tylissos offers a convenient basis for discovering various parts of northern Crete. It is a 20’minute drive to the Minoan Palace of Knossos and the traditional village of Archanes, 50’ away from Rethymnon in the West, 60’ to Agios Nicholaos and Elounda, in the East. It offers numerous possibilities for discovering the stunning landscape of mount Psiloritis and its surrounding villages, as well as as well as various beaches nearby Heraklion, which are accessible by a short drive. Walking, Trekking, Cycling. For lovers of walking, trekking or cycling, Tylissos and its nearby areas offer beautiful small paths through olive- trees and vineries, small streams and hidden chapels -all in a hilly, green landscape. Access Tylissos can be accessed by car or taxi in 20’minutes from Heraklion airport, port, or city centre. A bus is also available from Chanioporta at the city centre. The House The house was originally built in the late eighteenth century as a complex of three small stone buildings gathering around a yard, following the traditional architecture of the area. It was entirely renovated by the distinguished Greek architect Suzanna Antonakakis featuring her distinctive mix of traditional and modernist elements. The main part of the house (I) comprises the kitchen and living-room on the ground floor and a large bedroom and wc with a small veranda on the first floor. An independent guest room (II) with shower and wc stands on the one side of the yard, and a second guest room (III) and separate bathroom with a small bathtub sits on the far side of the yard. It houses 4 people spread in the three areas (area II has a small double bed; area III has access over an outside staircase). A baby cot maybe provided for babies/young children.
