Area COVID-19 precautions will apply. The Casa Pitaya is located at the base of the Volcano Toliman, on the shore of Lake Atitlan. Surrounded by terraces of pitayas, flowers and fruit trees, this magical site is just 4 km. from San Lucas Toliman, adjacent to the Mesoamerican Permaculture Institute. Getting to the house is an adventure requiring multiple modes of transportation. (Read more about access to the house below.) The house has an open floor plan with one private bedroom and one semi private room, perfect for friends and family. The kitchen is an octágono located below the house. It's simple and beautiful with windows that give you a 160 degree view of the lake and mountains. The site is teaming with birds and surrounded by terraced gardens. The house has a large living room, two bedrooms and a day bed in the livingroom. There's a bathroom with an electric shower and a wood fired sauna. The only spaces we ask you to not access are the wooden cupboards in the living room surrounding the day bed. Otherwise, you are welcome to enjoy the books on the shelves and to use all houshold ammenities. We are not able to stock the kitchen for you but it is fully equipped. You can purchase your food in San Lucas Toliman and you can buy some essentials, like tortillas, sugar, salt and some dry foods at a local "tienda" in Pachitulul. The house has two bedrooms and a bed in the living room. It houses four people. Please keep the house and the kitchen locked when you are not there. Also, it is my recommendation to only receive guests from the community in the kitchen and not in the house. The house is your private space and the kitchen is more public. ENJOY!!! The people who live in and around Pachitulul are 99% Maya Kaqchikel and Maya Tzutujil. Please respect their culture and their lifestyle by refraining from drug use, excessive drinking and really loud music late at night. We have a wonderful relationship of mutual respect with the community - please help us foster this relationship. Local artisans and farmers might offer to sell you their crafts or food. Please feel free to support them or to politely decline. 1) If you're coming from Panajachel, find out what time the boats to San Lucas Toliman depart by searching for Naviera Sulugui on FB and let them know that you would like to get dropped off at the IMAP dock in Pachitulul. 2) In San Lucas Tolimán you can buy supplies and then pay Q20 to take a tuc tuc to IMAP in Pachitulul. 3) If you decide to go via Santiago Atitlan, make sure you depart by 3pm and then hop a pickup truck from Santiago to the entrance of Pachitulul. From there you walk towards the lake about 10 minutes. At the T in the road go left and keep walking along the dirt path until you reach the Permaculture Inst. You'll find folks at the IMAP office Monday - Friday 9-4pm. The Casa Pitaya is just beyond IMAP - look for the bamboo gate. If you're traveling with three or more people, elderly, or differently able-bodied people, young children or with lots of luggage, you might find it more reasonable to hire a private car from Guatemala City, Antigua or Panajachel to take you directly to the house. (Pachitulul, San Lucas Toliman, Solola) This might seem expensive ($100) but once you get settled into the Casa Pitaya you'll know it was worth every penny! Once you are at the house you'll find phone numbers for tuc tucs in the house. They charge Q20 one way to or from San Lucas Toliman. Otherwise you can walk to the main road and catch a bus or a pickup to San Lucas Toliman to check out the market on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday. IMAP, the Permaculture Inst., has an office on site. If you are interested in taking a tour or volunteering please check in with them Monday - Friday. There may be an onsite volunteer coordinator at IMAP who can answer your questions in the evenings and on the weekends. Please take good care of the Casa Pitaya and the Casa Pitaya will take good care of you!
