Welcome to the Historic Collins Residence! This incredible architectural home is steeped in history and offers modern conveniences like smart TV's & electronic self check-in. This 5 BR 2.5 BA home is beautiful, unique & spacious w/ a wrought iron fenced backyard & prime location- it's the perfect spot while staying in Alpena for weddings, events or w/ a large group. ~1 block to park w/ tennis, basketball, playground, & boat harbor! ~3 blocks to downtown for drinks, dinner, coffee, shops & more! The space This is a very architecturally unique and beautiful home. Much of it is original including the old growth hardwood floors, oversized baseboards, steam radiators, windows, etc still remain and function as they did 100+ years ago. The 4 upstairs bedrooms are quite large and all have king sized beds while the bedroom on the main floor has the original bed and vanity. The layout is unique by modern standards having two stairwells so hired help could move about the home without disturbing the owners. We’ve done our best to tastefully update and modernize the property while keeping as much original as possible. This home is steeped with history being built originally by prominent local businessman Richard Collins in the ~1890’s. Additionally, his son, Phelps Collins was a WW1 ace and was tragically killed on a mission to intercept German bombers en route to Paris. He is recognized as the first US pilot to die flying a combat mission with an American unit and is hailed as an early aviation hero. In 1931, when a new public airport was opened in Alpena County, the field was named Phelps Collins Field in his honor. This house, along with other historic homes in Alpena, are included on a walking tour which is very informative. Hot tub is available for bookings from May through October and is winterized for bookings November through April. Guest access Guests have access to entire home during their stay except the original maid’s quarters on the 3rd floor and the carriage house.
