The Stockade is the oldest neighborhood in Schenectady, with roots stretching back to 1661, when Dutch merchants and fur traders first settled along the Mohawk River. Early settlers built a wooden defensive wall — the “stockade” — around their settlement, giving the neighborhood its name. And also according to the National Parks Services, it has “the highest concentration of historic period homes in the country,” with over 40 homes over 200 years old.
