Behind the oldest saloon on the west coast, up a private, leafy path is everything you need for a weekend of rest or revelry. Our three smaller rooms feature queen beds and private bathrooms, while the three larger ones have two queens or a queen and trundle and small kitchenettes. Either way, there isn't a better place to hitch up. Catch great live music at Smiley's, right out your door, or rolling waves at the beach, a short stroll away. Smiley’s Schooner Saloon was established in 1851 and has been in continual operation in the same stalwart and storied building since - and we've yet to find an older bar west of the Mississippi. The saloon is believed to have been built for the energetic young Captain Isaac Morgan who arrived in Bolinas (or Jugville as it was known then) in 1849. Those were gold rush days, days of growth; when one gambled with one’s dreams and then watched them either shatter and splinter or be crafted and honed into realities. Smiley’s is known among musicians for gigs that come with free beds and a spirited crowd and to music fans as a place to catch artists like the Sam Chase and California Honeydrops. Check out our social media and website for our music calendar. So now you’ll need a place to rest your head; in an outbuilding behind the bar, you’ll find Smiley’s Sleeping Quarters: 7 private rooms with brand new organic linens and mattresses. Room 2 has one queen bed and 1 single day bed with a single pop-up trundle. Our bartenders are on site until (at least) midnight to check you in, give you your keys and answer any questions. We do not have a reception desk or concierge; once you have your keys you are on your own to come and go as you please. Please call our hotel hotline (number in the welcome packet) if you have any issues. Surrounded by protected parks and ocean, the tiny town of Bolinas provides a wild, peaceful escape from the bustle of San Francisco just 25 miles away. Be sure to read up on the history of Bolinas and the many articles written about what do to in and around west Marin: oysters at Marshall Store, horseback riding at Five Brooks Ranch, bird watching at the Observatory, rope swing at Bass Lake, mountain and road bike trails, surf spots, crabbing, tidepooling, fishing, farming and way more. Every day here is a blessing. Most people drive to Bolinas...and the town is notoriously without signage, but there is public transportation to Bolinas from "over the hill" via the Marin Stagecoach. Parking can be tough on weekends, but hotel guests enjoy reserved spots in our private lot. Bikes are recommended. *Please note that live music often results in some excess noise (and fun) later into the evening.* At this time, Smiley's rooms aren't suitable for folks in need of total peace and quiet.
