Description

Spacious and cozy apartment that feels like living in a treehouse yet located less than two blocks away from North Berkeley’s iconic shopping/dining area. Enjoy your own sun-drenched redwood deck overlooking back gardens and treetops. The space Minimum 1-month renters only thanks! The amazingly bright and sunny 2nd story apartment has an airy and open loft-like feel. A-frame style ceiling creates interesting angles, while French doors, skylights, and multiple windows (with light-filtering shades in main space) fill it with light from the east, south, and west. A private super sunny 2nd story deck, coupled with the location at the rear of the property, help to create a quiet oasis/garden feel. The apartment is located at the rear of a 100-year old classic Berkeley residence that has been split into three apartments. Very sought-after location in a quiet and peaceful North Berkeley neighborhood with tree-lined streets. GENERAL HOME DETAILS: • Kitchen is small, but fully functional - includes classic old tile countertop and backsplash, a stainless steel apartment-sized fridge, and 4-burner gas range/stove. All the basic items you need for cooking/baking and serving at home are provided. • Cozy loft space with futon (turns into comfortable queen sized bed), beanbag chair and throw pillows is located above the main living area; it has two skylights and can be used as yoga/meditation room, guest sleepovers (we do charge $15/night per person), storage, or whatever works for you. Must use wooden ladder to access so not great for folks with mobility issues. • Dining table seats up to four (there are also four chairs) and has leaves that can be folded away when only seating 2. • Separate work/office area in corner of main living space features a desk, file cabinets, and ergonomic-style chair. • Brand new smart flat screen TV on swivel mount with sound bar attached. • Digital Piano (Kuwai) in living room for those who like to tickle the ivories. It has some features for recording, metronome, and accompaniment. • Bathroom has molded shower enclosure and vintage sink. • Bedroom is located at rear of apartment, separated from main living space by hallway, has queen sized bed and ample closet/storage space • Berber carpet throughout main living space, linoleum in kitchen/bath, and bamboo in loft. • This space is often quite warm due to all the sun exposure, however there is also a gas wall heater in the main living area and a space heater for the rear bedroom (if needed). • Entrance to apartment is by walking up the driveway and then up two flights of wooden stairs. The private redwood deck has some succulents and overlooks a shared yard (used by the other building residents). On clear days and all year round, the deck is flooded in warm California sunshine. • Free full sized laundry and utility sink is also located onsite and shared by the other residents. Access via separate entrance from driveway. • This apartment sits directly above a second, studio apartment occupied by a single tenant. There is also one shared wall between this apartment and the large apartment that makes up the majority of the front portion of the house. The shared wall is located in the bedroom of this apartment and comprises portions of the front unit’s study and bathroom. • This apartment is very quiet since it is far from the street. The building is 100+ years old, however, so you will be aware of neighbor’s muffled sounds of living. Front unit is occupied by a family with teen child and lower unit is a single female. Everyone is very respectful and conscientious about noise during quiet hours. • The owners lived in various parts of this home (including this apartment) for 30+ years – it has been very well cared for but it is not pristine or perfect by any stretch. It is lovingly worn around the edges while being very functional/comfortable. Eclectic décor and art were collected by the owners from years of living in North Berkeley. • You will be given a "starter set" of supplies such as toilet paper and soap. As a long-term guest, you will be responsible for refilling these basic items as you need them. Guest access No car needed, you can walk to EVERYTHING from this location! Within five blocks is Trader Joes (on University Ave) and Safeway (on Shattuck Ave) or head slightly further (1.2 miles) to the fabulous Monterey Market. North Berkeley BART station is nine blocks away (most of which is along a greenway) and includes a casual carpool pickup location. In addition, the FS transbay bus stops on Shattuck, less than 3 blocks away. Another active independent shopping district filled with shops/galleries/cafes/restaurants is located nearby on Solano Ave (1.2 miles). Other things to note • This is a shoe-free home to keep space cleaner and to be less intrusive to tenants below. • Price is based on DOUBLE occupancy. If you wish to have a 3rd person join, there is an additional fee of $10/day to cover utilities and wear/tear. • The building is a triplex: there is one apartment that comprises the front/main house and this is one of two small units attached to the rear of the home. The other building occupants have access to the shared laundry area and shared yard (which is visible from the upper deck). • We require a mid-stay clean for stays of one month. For longer stays we arrange for our cleaners to come a minimum of once per month. This is an added cost of $100 per clean ($125 if using both beds) that will be passed through at the guest's expense and will include fresh linens and a basic clean of the entire space. The end of stay clean (which is already included in the booking price) is a much deeper clean which includes cleaning all appliances, cabinets, shelves, and windows. • PLEASE NOTE: you are considered a "long-term" guest and as such you will be required to refill your own supplies such as toilet paper, soap, etc. We will give you a "starter set" but after that is gone - it is on you.
