Mountains and Rivers, Secluded Cabin
Mountains and Rivers, Secluded Cabin
Description
"Of all the retreats I have found among the Catskills there is no other that possesses quite so many charms for me as this valley. It is so wild, so quiet and has such superb views." - John Burroughs. Our beautiful cabin, tucked into a secluded hollow at the base of Romer Mountain, sits by Woodland Valley Creek. A couple of miles up the road are trailheads to Giant Ledge, Panther, Wittenberg and Slide. Phoenicia hamlet is 4 miles away. Woodstock, Belleayre and Hunter are within 1/2 hour. The space Featuring lofty ceilings, wood beams, skylights, and a catwalk, this cabin is a unique architectural work. With 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, and a basement sofa/bed, it hosts up to 8. Each bedroom has a full size bed, and upstairs bedrooms have balconies with mountain and stream views. The fully equipped kitchen (and library of cookbooks) will delight any cook. There is a fire pit by the creek, and a large grill, a smoker and two picnic tables on the deck. From the screened-in porch, listen to the water as you take in the view. You may see beavers, bears, deer, bald eagles and turkeys. Hang out and play games in the finished basement, or cozy up by the wood stove. From spring until fall, the flower garden is abundant with colorful blossoms. A path by the shed leads to a beautiful river bend with wild flowers growing among the rocks. In the other direction, a steep mountain stream flowing into the river separates our property from our neighbor's. About 150 feet upstream from the house is where you will find easy access to the river. Here you can take a cool dip. For Tesla drivers, we had a wall connector installed at the front of our garage. Our property has almost 5 acres of woodland bordered by New York Forest Preserve so essentially you can enjoy thousands of acres of forest in your own backyard. Other things to note This is a popular river for fly fishers—guests may fish in the river that runs through our land. Downstream from our house there is a rocky island formed by the diversion of the river where you can do rock-walking while surrounded by wild flowers. We are turning our screened in porch into an all season room with a loft. The renovation will be done by end of May, 2026.
