Description

This one-of-a-kind, accessible home in the heart of Hoosier Nat'l Forest is the perfect getaway from the proverbial stressors of everyday life. A nature lover's paradise, Hawks' Ridge is located amidst a wildlife refuge remotely midway between Indiana University and iconic Brown County. Relax in a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces; all created with your comfort in mind. There are plenty of ways to get active too; a great location for hiking, biking, boating, kayaking and more! The space BEFORE booking, please read through the ENTIRE listing so there are no surprises! :) Inside of our cabin, you are surrounded by the natural beauty of a handcrafted straw bale home. The floors are a mix of hardwood, tile, and cork. The custom kitchen and main bathroom, along with main bedroom, have all been updated with ADA accessibility in mind. The approach to the home has also been outfitted with a generously sized ramp for easy access. The main floor includes a small but mighty amply stocked kitchen, walk-in (non-accessible) pantry, main bedroom and separate bath, dining area, living room, small bonus room, laundry facilities, and access to two separate outdoor porch/deck spaces. The main bedroom and living room each have one Roku TV. There is a woodstove ("Sparky") in the living room that can be available seasonally for woodburning ONLY with explicit permission from owner. Please ask me if you're interested. Upstairs, you'll find a loft perfect for movie nights and family game time, two bedrooms (the queen bedroom has a tv) and a full bath with shower/tub combo. The loft has one large screen Roku TV. This makes a total of four TVs in the home. (The unfinished basement is off limits to guests at this time) The geothermal heating and air conditioning system is not only efficient, but also quiet. * Bring your favorite slippers in the winter months though, as the floors can be chilly underfoot! * In the front of the property, there are trees and a garden that produce seasonal offerings that are available to you for what you may use during your stay. (Some offerings include hazelnuts, persimmons, strawberries, cherries, and a variety of herbs.) MOUNTAIN BIKERS have close access to some of the Midwest's very best bike trails. Bird watchers can go deep into the woods or simply sit on the deck to spot a wide variety of migratory songbirds, raptors, owls and more. The Northfork Wildlife Refuge is also close by. ** While our home is more than fit for guests, please keep in mind it is still a work in progress with plenty of upcoming projects to truly finish the space! (Projects that, among other things, include finish plaster, landscaping work and reorganizing shed storage and other outdoor materials. If a few messy/unorganized outdoor spaces make you uncomfortable, this might not be your ideal destination. Just wanting to be up front about that :) Guest access Please know that Hawks' Ridge is a remote location and not typically thought of as "convenient" by most standards. Be prepared for traveling on a winding, gravel road! :) It's approximately 10 minutes off of highway 46. Uncovered parking is available in the driveway. Approximately once or twice a year, TC Steele Rd. will flood near the highway. When this occurs, there is a back way (a bit longer with lots of gravel) that you can use for access. Other things to note Please let me know ahead of time if you have individuals needing wheelchair access in your group, or guests under the age of 12. Properties like ours nestled in the Hoosier Nat'l Forest include a wide variety of critters big and small, and occasionally some you need to be aware of, including local snakes and insects. Also, power outages happen from time to time because of fallen trees on the Duke Energy power lines. When and if this were to happen, power would likely be restored in a short period of time. Be aware of the potential hazards of falling limbs in such a heavily wooded area as this one; especially on windy days! Acorns falling from the oak trees during autumn can easily be heard landing on the metal roof from jnside the cabin, and are sometimes very loud. You will be approximately 30 minutes from the beautiful Indiana University campus in Bloomington and approximately 20 minutes to historic Nashville in beautiful Brown County. For families with children and infants...Please know that we welcome youngsters of all ages, but it is your responsibility to maintain their safety. By booking a reservation at Hawks' Ridge, you are assuming all responsibility for the safety and well being of all visitors during your stay no matter the age. We offer safety items such as outlet covers, but our home is *not equipped with items such as safety gates for stairs etc. Feel free to reach out with any questions regarding bookings that include young children and I'd be happy to discuss any potential concerns or questions you have! Finally...because of its remote location, for a fee, I offer grocery service for guests of Hawks' Ridge. If you're interested in having grocery items stocked and ready for your arrival, let me know and I'll get you a price!
