Description

Peace and tranquility await you at a quaint cottage on historic Perry Farm, where the original 19th century farmhouse still stands today. Stroll several acres of land and enjoy pastoral views while you unwind at this peaceful historic property in the hills of northern Shenandoah Valley. This rural retreat is easily accessed from I-81 and located a short 10-minute drive from historic downtown Winchester. Enjoy local wineries, breweries, farm markets, and the renowned Apple Blossom Festival. The space The Lockley Cottage is a smallish space, so there's not a lot to go over here. It is part of a cluster of buildings that formed the John and Isabell Perry homestead dating back to the mid-1800s. The other buildings are planned for renovation and are not currently accessible. They include the original, two-story farmhouse, a cellar building with upper story probably used for drying herbs and possibly meats, a chicken coop, and a "tiny barn". The property is about 7 acres of land, mostly pasture. Guest access You'll have access to the entire cottage and the 7-acre property on which it sits. We try to keep paths cut in the pasture so you can walk the property and enjoy nature. Other things to note Water is provided to the cottage via an artesian well drawing from the iron-rich aquifer common in the area. There may occasionally be off-putting odors that a few of our guests have described as “stinky”. The kitchen faucet is equipped with a cold-water filter that mitigates the iron odor, but we provide some bottled water for your pleasure. If you choose to do laundry while staying in the cottage, DO NOT USE BLEACH, as it can oxidize the minerals in the water and stain your clothing! We recommend adding about a half cup of "Twenty Mule Team" Borax (provided along with laundry detergent and fabric softener) to each load. SLOW INTERNET ALERT! We have satellite internet service, which works well for streaming music and viewing short videos; however, streaming movies on your device can be difficult and frustrating! So, we recommend that you download your movies or other video content onto your device before you arrive. We also recommend you link your mobile phones to the Wi-Fi, as cellular service is not good at the house. A short walk up the hill to the pasture will usually get you good cell service independent of the Wi-Fi. WARNING: BARN CAT SIGHTING! The Perry Farm is, after all, part of what once was a working farm. Cats sometimes take up residence under some of the old buildings, so don’t be alarmed if you encounter one when outside the cottage. They are not tame, so you shouldn’t have to worry about them approaching you. We do caution our dog-owner guests, to be wary of the feline presence. We equip our kitchen with some basics for cooking, including silverware, dishware, pots, and pans. Salt, pepper, olive oil, and red wine vinegar are provided. We also have an assortment of small packaged items that vary from time to time, but usually include rice, couscous, Panko, ground cumin, garlic powder, and paprika. It’s no gourmet kitchen, but if you find yourself cooking and need an ingredient, we just may have it.
