Historic Brookside from 1843 is a landmark in the area, and is listed with the National Register of Historic Places. We are a short drive to Lake Champlain, skiing and all that Vermont has to offer! We have miles of trails to explore on over 238 acres. You will be the ONLY GUESTS. The home is peaceful and grand. Limited cooking facilities are available with prior notice. The Guest Suite has a bedroom, sitting room and full bath. Additional rooms available for larger groups with advance notice. Your suite has vaulted ceilings, luxurious original trim and charming features, as well as a wonderful Kohler whirlpool tub. It overlooks the west-facing wrap-around porch. The parquet room is off to one side and leads to the grand formal parlor. In winter, the grand parlor is generally not heated, for economic reasons, but you are welcome to take a peek! As you will be the only guests, you may enjoy the downstairs public spaces as you see fit. There are areas upstairs under renovation, and we are happy to give you a guided tour, but they are off limits to guests, other than that. The main kitchen is also under renovation, but it is functional, if you need to cook. The house is quite large. We are in residence some of the time, but most of the time it’s just our caretaker, David. Your suite is very private and spacious, but you are not renting the entire house. You are getting a private suite that is within the larger mansion. We do have other rooms for larger parties, but they are not yet fully renovated. It is possible we could accommodate your extra guests with plenty of advance notice. The house is 180-240 years old, depending on which part of the home you are in. She shows her age and character in places, as any old home does. The guest suite is a nicely renovated suite within a romantic, historic, preserved old home. Many fixtures and furnishings are more than a century (sometimes two centuries) old. If you enjoy history, charm, and old world style, this is your kind of place. J.P. Morgan himself stayed in your suite before there was heat, plumbing, or electricity! We are animal lovers (we have a few cats and turtles ourselves) and can accommodate your pets with some communication before hand. We also have several other rooms not normally rented if you have additional travelers with you. The place is huge and largely unused right now so let’s get creative! Plenty of parking. The space is not handicapped accessible unfortunately. There are several small stairs to enter. We are all super flexible. We would love to give you a tour and chat or we can totally disappear and give you room. Up to you…. We are close to: Mount Independence (Revolutionary War battlefield) Lake Champlain and beaches Chipmans Point Marina Several wineries The Middlebury College Morgan Horse Farm and Museum Vergennes, VT Brandon, VT Shelburne, VT (where a replica of Brookside exists at the museum) Middlebury Rutland Lake Bomoseen Fairhaven VT Killington Ski Area Miles of private trails and nature to explore on the property Sledding on property in winter Fire pit on property when burn laws allow Hay rides behind vintage tractor a possibility also You are staying in the country. That’s why you are here! That said, major conveniences like Walmart are a bit of a drive. Rutland, Middlebury, Burlington are all at least a 25 minute drive away. You’ll obviously need your own personal transportation as Uber and public transportation etc are nonexistent. There’s plenty to explore right on the property with miles of hiking trails and forest and loads of wonderful nearby activities. We have several great local restaurants that are great within a 10-20 minute drive but late arrivals may not be able to find food ithout prior arrangement. That’s said, we often cook wonderful meals and invite guests to join us. This is not a guarantee, however, and you should plan on finding your own provisions. Someday in the future we may offer a “full service” kind of meal experience.
