Description
Pollywinky Cottage is a peaceful Cornwall hideaway, just a 15-minute walk to the beach and an easy stroll to two pubs. Set in the quiet hamlet of Treknow on Cornwall’s dramatic north coast, the cottage sits beside the coastal footpath with miles of walking straight from the door. Overlooking open fields and filled with morning light, it’s ideal for couples, families and walkers seeking a relaxed coastal escape. Sleeping up to six guests. The space Pollywinky Cottage is a welcoming, characterful coastal cottage dating back to 1880, offering a relaxed and comfortable base in the quiet hamlet of Treknow. Retaining much of its original charm, the cottage has a genuine home-from-home feel, with a cosy wood-burning stove, comfortable furnishings and a calm, lived-in atmosphere that encourages you to slow down and unwind. On the ground floor, the cosy living room has two sofas, bean bags, a log burner for cooler evenings, and a TV with Firestick for streaming. Double doors open directly onto the front garden, bringing in plenty of natural light and countryside views. A good selection of books and games are provided, and reliable Wi-Fi makes it easy to stream, work remotely or stay connected (Wi-Fi calling is available, as mobile signal is limited). A separate dining room seats six comfortably and sits next to the kitchen, with a handy serving hatch and a large window. The kitchen itself is medium-sized and well equipped for proper family meals, with an oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, freezer and washing machine. A rear door leads out to the side passage and back yard, useful for storage and drying beach gear or wetsuits. Upstairs are three bedrooms and a family bathroom. The main bedroom has a king-size bed, built-in wardrobe, sink and lovely open views across the surrounding fields. The second bedroom has two standard single beds (which can be pushed together) and a freestanding wardrobe, also enjoying countryside views. The third bedroom is smaller and ideal for children, with two standard single beds and sloping eaves, overlooking the back yard. Mattresses are comfortable and relatively new, and all bedrooms have bedside tables and good natural light. The bathroom has both a full-size bath and a separate power shower, with decent water pressure and a large window providing natural light. The style sits comfortably between modern and traditional, and works well for both families and groups returning from the beach. Outside, the fully enclosed front garden is small but sunny and safe for young children. Facing south-east, it enjoys morning sun and sunshine through much of the afternoon in summer. There is a lawned area with a bench, two sun loungers, and an outdoor table and chairs — a peaceful spot to relax with views across open fields and countryside. A gate leads directly from the garden to the driveway. Around the side of the cottage is a passageway leading to a partially decked back yard, useful for storing surfboards and outdoor equipment. The cottage has central heating throughout, controlled by a thermostat, and stays warm and comfortable during cooler periods. The wood burner supplements the heating and adds to the atmosphere on quieter evenings. Parking is available for one very large car directly in front of the cottage, which is unusual for the area. The lane is narrow and a dead end, with very little traffic, and some guests choose to park in the village around 50–60 metres away. The setting is extremely peaceful, with birdsong, open fields and occasional sheep opposite, and only walkers passing by on their way to the coast. Fresh bed linen and bath towels are provided, with all beds made up for your arrival. Please note that beach towels are not supplied, so we recommend bringing your own for beach days and swimming. Pollywinky Cottage is within easy walking distance of the South West Coast Path, the beach at Trebarwith Strand (a beautiful low-tide beach, visible around three hours either side of low tide), and two popular pubs. It is particularly well suited to families, couples, walkers and surfers looking for a quiet, authentic coastal cottage with excellent access to Cornwall’s north coast. Guest access The cottage is accessed via a narrow, quiet Cornish lane typical of the area. There is reserved parking for one large car directly in front of the cottage, which is unusual for this location. Opposite the cottage is an unreserved lay-by which can sometimes be used for turning. If the lay-by is occupied, guests may need to reverse a short distance when leaving, and some guests prefer to park in the village around 50–60 metres away, where there is additional informal parking. Guests have sole use of the fully enclosed front garden, as well as access to the side passage and the partially decked back yard, which is useful for storing beach equipment, surfboards and drying wetsuits. Other things to note Trebarwith Strand is a beautiful low-tide beach, so we recommend checking tide times before walking down. At high tide the beach disappears completely; the best time to visit is within around three hours either side of low tide. At Trebarwith Strand you’ll find a café and the Port William pub, both serving good food with wonderful sea views. The South West Coast Path is just a five-minute walk from the cottage, with spectacular walking in both directions along the cliffs. For swimming, surfing and beach time, Trebarwith Strand is fantastic at low tide. Bosinney Cove (5 minutes by car) is also stunning, but again best at low tide. Tregardock Beach (about 15 minutes’ drive followed by a 20-minute walk through fields) is very quiet and special — low tide only, but well worth the effort. For all-tide swimming, we love Port Gaverne (around 20 minutes by car). Nearby Boscastle (15 minutes by car) has great swimming from the harbour, though no sandy beach. Polzeath (around 25 minutes) is busier, with excellent surfing, shops and cafés, and Daymer Bay is another favourite for sandy beaches. For moorland walking, head to Bodmin Moor and park at the Brown Willy Circular Walk car park (25 minutes by car). In winter, the nearby area is also a wonderful place to see starling murmurations at sunset.
