Description

A large detached beach house situated on Down End point, with the most marvellous views. It has 4 bedrooms on the upper floor, 1 with ensuite, plus a family bathroom. Downstairs is glazed from floor to ceiling giving magnificent light throughout. It is largely open plan with a kitchen/living area, a table seating 10 people, large sofas, a log burner, a pool table and outdoor space below the decking. The house is 1 mile from the centre of Croyde village, but 2 mins from the bay/beach itself. The space Oyster Falls stands at the end of the Saunton Down, known simply as Down End, in North Devon. Down End point is well known to be a fantastic surf break, but only for the experienced surfer - on a good day watch them dare to ride the waves here... The family owned much land around this area spending time here in the summer, and the winter in Barnstaple. A proper house was built here in the 1950’s replacing the beach hut that had stood here long before it, but it was cold and drafty so was rebuilt as an eco Passiv Haus in 2014. It boasts some of the most amazing views of Baggy Point, the Hartland Peninsula, Croyde Bay, Lundy Island, the rocks and sea all around. It has a westerly aspect and so watches the weather come in from the Atlantic but inside is beautifully calm, weathertight and cosy, the best place to come back to should a storm brew. You can walk from the house to the beach, or take a circular walk around to Saunton Sands up over The Down and back into Croyde, catch a coffee or ice cream, or lunch in The Thatch and stroll back home again. Or why not venture over the bay to Baggy Point and look back at the views of Down End, Appledore and Clovelly beyond (on a clear day!) or carry on over to Putsborough and Woolacoombe to the North. Even better still get the wet suits on and take a dip in the sea under the care of the Croyde Surf Academy based in Down End Car Park just 2 mins walk down the road. Walk through the garden and down the road, or along the coastal path. Oyster Falls is named after the break that occurs (only in the right conditions) about a mile out to sea, (looking towards Lundy) believed to have been formed by the Americans who occupied much of Croyde when training for WWII, their bomb practise created a small reef. It is not so much an upside down house, but you do enter on the top floor where there are 4 bedrooms that can be set up to suit, (currently a master Super King with ensuite, the guest room can be a Super King or split to a twin, (what would you prefer?), then theres a double and a small double and a family bathroom. We can set up a camp bed in the small double room taking the total number to 8 if required, poss best only for a child, just let us know with your booking. Stand at the large picture window and take in the view, or get comfy in the armchair just there for a wonderful afternoon snooze. then walk down the stairs to the wonderfully fully glazed and open ground floor. A large kitchen living area with double fridge, all the amenities, a table that can seat 10 or even 12, a log burner, sliding doors to the wraparound decking, a long pantry room with extra dedicated guest fridge/freezer space, a laundry room, a pool table/office area, a downstairs toilet, store room and 'the end room' where you can snuggle down in the sofa's to watch a good film. There are logs for the burner, and body boards for the sea, should you wish to borrow, are under the decking, as is an access gate to the fields in front for private access to the coastal path. There may be sheep in the field so do remember the country code and ensure you shut the gate ! Guest access there is space for 3 or 4 cars by the house, or over the road in our quarry where there is an old garage (not accessible). You can walk from the house, but do be aware of the road. Especially keep an eye on children. Other things to note We will ensure that someone is available to help should you have any troubles. Details will be in the house book which you will find on the coffee table.
