Description

Private apartment suite in a famous historic mansion. This is not a luxury unit in terms of finishes but it is a memorable and breathtaking setting altogether. The castle-like exterior combined with the great location make this a perfect choice for budget conscious travelers who are ok with less than slick surroundings but still want something special. Private bathroom and kitchen! Shared outdoor yard space. Free public street parking. Full bedroom plus bonus Twin bed in kitchen area. The space The George Baldwin House was constructed in 1887. Designed by architect William Gibbons Preston. This was the first commission for Preston who later went on to design many of the most famous and impressive Savannah landmarks such as the Cotton Exchange. You will go in the side door of this sprawling mansion and then up a flight of stairs in a shared stairwell to your private unit door. You will have a key to both that main side door and your unit door. There is a private bathroom (the toilet is in a separate room from the sink and claw foot tub). The kitchen has a Twin bed on the side of the room. The bedroom has a Double bed and a TV with local channels. The AC is a window unit (not central). This is a rustic un-renovated unit. This is not good for anyone who is picky. Tv with digital antenna for local channels. While it has been updated since the original pre-1900 construction it has not been recently updated and is very "antique" feeling. The tub, bidet and sink and are antique and will be sanitized but may appear old. The tub does have a shower conversion ring (do not pull on the curtain). City if Savannah SVR-00684 Guest access This castle-like home has a large garden/yard which is shared by the owner, a long term renter and 3 other vacation rentals. The stairwell leading to your apartment suite door is shared. Your suite is totally private and nobody shares your bathroom or kitchen. Everyone, regardless of whether they are a friend of the owner or a renter, has the same quiet hours rule at night. If anyone is failing to respect that rule do let us know. Outdoor space is shared space and should not be utilized for socialization past 9pm to avoid causing noise complaints from neighbors. Your apartment is your private space where you are welcome to stay up late talking and laughing as it will not disturb others. Music should be turned off by 9pm. Other things to note Coastal Georgia has “palmetto bugs” which are giant cockroaches living by the thousands outside. There is no way to prevent guests from seeing them once in a while, unfortunately. Fresh poison just means guests see them slow or dead instead of alive. Again I completely understand how awful they look. We all hate them but are used to them if we live here. That being said, we do not offer any refund to guest who see a palmetto bug in their rental. Take note that this unit is priced low for a reason, namely the window AC and old surfaces and furnishings that set it apart from the many high end glossy expensive rentals downtown Savannah has to offer. I manage many of those myself so if you believe you would prefer something like that ask me for a suggestion! Also take note this unit does not come with a washer/dryer. Also worth mentioning, the on site owner and his gardener sometimes store junky looking items by the side door entry you will use, adding to the non-corporate quirky experience that is the George Baldwin Mansion. Events, holidays and stays during March & April may require 3 night minimums and/or have higher rates than the standard ones published. This is a traditional vacation rental home, not a “bed and breakfast”. We do not provide food or drinks but we do provide basic cooking and serving utensils, a coffee maker, and dish soap. Downtown Savannah has a major supermarket (Kroger) and a 24 hour market (Parkers on Drayton) so there is no need to pack everything from home if shopping when you get here makes more sense. What to bring with you: A typical grocery run prior to arriving at your vacation home would include coffee, beer/wine, milk, eggs, butter, bread and any other basic groceries you would need for the meals you eat in the home. When it comes to coffee, bring your own ground coffee. The suite has a 12-cup drip coffee maker. We do not typically provide coffee but if you find coffee in the suite please feel free to use it. You should bring or buy your own napkins, your own beach towels and beach gear, and your own cooler if you need one. What we provide: We provide toilet paper (2 extras per bathroom), liquid hand washing dish soap, bathroom soap, sheets on each bed, and at least one bath towel for each guest. We do not permit our towels to be taken out of the house which is why you must bring your own towels if you visit the beach. If you find we have left seasonings, oil, dishwasher pellets, or any unopened food or drinks then of course feel free to use what is there. We occasionally leave items but just cannot promise them all the time. Please also note that in Savannah, sugar ants can smell cookies, spilled sugar or syrup, or an open sugar container from a mile away and will find a way in through a windowsill or door frame. It can be somewhat like a cartoon picnic where they march in a line to find the food. To avoid this try to keep your snacks contained in air tight baggies, the refrigerator, or buy single serve packets and put the trash in the outdoor trash cans as soon as possible. The following is standard Savannah Luxury Rentals information: We provide sheets, toilet paper and soap. If you prefer thick cushioned toilet paper bring it along but use it sparingly in our older plumbing and never flush "flushable" wipes or other products that are likely to cause a clog.
