If you're looking for a sanitized resort experience, don't stay here! This is a local neighborhood where locals chill in the streets and on stoops, and the neighborhood kids chase chickens in the alley. A true slice of local life, this historic cottage is in the beating heart of downtown St. Thomas. You can get the best of both worlds with a mixture of authentic island culture and tourist destinations right at your finger tips. Early 1900s island life--but with wifi! This is a two bedroom cottage with a railroad floor plan that accommodates 4 people. There are 2 separate bedrooms, a kitchen nook, and living/dining rooms. Eclectic furniture, fans, and window ACs will make you feel at home in the tropics. Courtyard views, downtown sounds, and a stray chicken or two! 2 additional people can be added to the booking for $30/night/person. The living room has a sleeper sofa that sleeps 2. If you need to use the sleeper sofa, let us know so we can provide extra linens. The entire cottage will be yours during your stay. It has a separate entrance. There is no parking on the alley where the cottage is. In fact, the cottage is on an alley originally made for donkeys and is too narrow for cars! On adjacent streets and alleys there is free but very limited parking. The savvy traveler can navigate their way to the cottage for just one buck from the airport (ask us how!). We are located 3 short blocks from Main Street and Emancipation Garden. Walk to restaurants and shops on Main Street, the local grocer, or catch the Safari (open-air bus) to Brewer's Beach or Lindberg Bay for just $1. For $2 you can get to Coki and Sapphire Beaches or the bustling east end hub of Red Hook. The alley that this property is on and the neighborhood itself is rough around the edges. It is a family neighborhood with local vibes. The neighborhood is a melting pot of cultures and you will hear Haitian Creole, Spanish, and St. Thomian all around. Friday and Saturday nights are lively at the corner store and locals sit on their front stoops, chatting and socializing. You can get a happy hour drink, good food and sunset views at the hotel bar around the corner (Sunset Grill). The convenience store (Biso Mini Mart) is fine for basics, but Moe's, the upscale grocery, has good wine and food, about a 10 minute walk away on the Waterfront. As this is a downtown area, there is free but very limited street parking. The property is on a street too narrow for cars. Downtown living offers easy walking distance to grocery stores, bars, restaurants, shops, banks, parks, the waterfront, etc. Using the local safaris (dollar bus) is also quite easy--the closest bus stop is a 5 minute walk away. Ask us how to use the safaris. You will enter the "Soursop" House through from the main access alley. Originally built as rowhouses for workers, this cottage retains much of its early 1900s charm. The early residents each had their own living space and shared a common cook pot in the courtyard. The property, still a work in progress, has since been updated and converted into three quaint cottages, each now with their own kitchen, bathroom, and living spaces. You will see the remnants of the original layout of the workers rooms in the design of the cottage. Reach out if you would like to rent the other one bedroom cottage.
