We are so excited to welcome you to The Orchard House in Damascus! This fantastic riverfront home and sprawling manicured property are one of a kind, with everything you need to host a small or large group comfortably, while enjoying easy access to your private river area, to the Virginia Creeper Trail (which runs the length of the property) and the convenience of being only 3/4 of a mile from town in your private paradise. We hope you love this place as much as we do, it's truly one of a kind! :::BEFORE YOU MAKE YOUR RESERVATION::: >>Please read the entire listing, including house rules and cancellation policy, and ask any questions you may have. >>Make sure your guest count is correct, and let us know if you need bedding for the pullout couch. This amazing and unique property was acquired by the direct neighbors, your well loved and experienced Superhosts over at Laurel Run Cabins. Joe and Trudy have burned the midnight oil to make this house a home, and it shows in the thoughtful details… a well appointed kitchen, gorgeous local art, comfortable furnishings, cozy blankets, and high quality linens and towels. We have some brand new additions include a game room in the garage, a large deck off of the river side, and some fun yard games. The game room features a pool table, air hockey/ping pong, darts and a foosball table. We have upgraded the shelter by the river to include a full sized refrigerator and a big grill for all your outdoor meal needs. We have more upgrades in the works and future improvements planned. We have set this place up to accommodate your large group all together in comfort, or your smaller group in spacious luxury. While we do welcome children, please note this home does not have any child proofing. We do not have gates on the stairs, outlet covers, fireplace screens or cabinet locks. No matter the size of your group, you will have the entire house. It includes, the downstairs of the house, including the main living room, master bedroom and bathroom, Jack and Juliette bedrooms and shared, spacious bathroom, kitchen, dining nook, living room, laundry room, garage/game room with extra refrigerator for more snacks and drinks, bonus bathroom with an accessible walk in shower (see pictures) and private access to the yard, river and Orchard area. You also have the upstairs. It has an additional plush seating area with a view of the sprawling front lawn and Creeper Trail, a bedroom with one queen sized bed, a full bathroom, and the ‘Kids’ room, a large wing only accessible through the first upstairs bedroom, which has three twin sized beds, and was recently decked out with a fun rug and cube storage. Downstairs, the pull out sofa bed and the regular couch could make for a whopping 14 COMFORTABLE vertical positions in the house, and more options for air mattresses with discussion. The cabins are also available next door, if extra beds are needed for an event or occasion. We also have a pack and play and 2 high chairs stored in the master bedroom closet for your use. Please bring your own bedding for the pack and play. The entire property is yours to enjoy, with the exception of the caretakers home and garden. I’m a phone call or text away if you need anything. I’m not far from the property if you need me to come by. The Orchard House is located about 3/4 of a mile from Town. A few minutes by car, or 20 minutes walk on the Creeper Trail will get you to the nearest grocery store, which is a Food City on Rt.58. The nearest neighbors, across plenty of lawn and separated by a green wall, are the owners of the rental property, and have several more one and two bedroom cabins available on their gorgeous piece of riverfront land. Please inquire if you have any questions about the cabins! On the other end of the orchard is our resident caretakers home and envy inducing garden, which you'll pass through on your way down the drive. If you've been here before, then you are well aware of the charm that is Damascus, but if this is your first time, be prepared to fall for this small but lively town with lovely period architecture and a soul of southern hospitality (I promise you will, we all do!) Boxed in on three sides by National Forest, this area offers unparalleled access to the outdoors for people of all fitness levels. 'Trail Town, USA' is known worldwide for its hiking, biking, and heritage trails. The Appalachian Trail follows Laurel Avenue right through the heart of Damascus. The Virginia Creeper Trail, a 34-mile multi-use trail from Abingdon to Whitetop Mountain, is one of the countries most cherished Rail-to-trails, runs directly though this rental property, and hosts a variety of races throughout the year. The Trans-America National Bicycle Trail, the Iron Mountain Trail, the Daniel Boone Heritage Trail, the Crooked Road Musical Heritage Trail, and Virginia’s Birding and Wildlife Trail all pass through Damascus along their routes. Neighboring parks like Grayson Highlands State Park, Hungry Mother State Park, and the Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area offer hiking at every degree of difficulty, and some of the best single-track mountain biking you will find in the U.S. The highest navigable road in Virginia leads to the summit of Whitetop mountain, which provides panoramic views of three states from over 5,000 feet of elevation, and is a beautiful, but curvy (leave people who get carsick at home) 1 hour drive from town. Aside from the 1,000 feet of river frontage you’ll be able to enjoy at The Orchard House, there are many more nearby rivers and streams in both Virginia and Tennessee offering world class trout fishing and a wide variety of other game species, along with kayaking and rafting. South Holston Lake (20 minutes from the cabins) is gorgeous and never overcrowded. Renting a Pontoon boat, jet ski, SUP, or kayak are great ways to get out on the water and explore this unspoiled area. Nearby Abingdon, a Virginia Historic Landmark and thriving artistic community, hosts the Barter Theatre, which opened on June 10, 1933 and is the longest-running professional theatre in the nation. Enjoy unique local shops, historical buildings, a thriving farmers market and year-round live music at a number of venues. Abingdon was voted #1 in USA Today’s “Best Small-Town Food Scene” competition. Try White Birch, 128 Pecan, Rain, The Girl and The Raven, The Peppermill, the Tavern, or The Harvest Table in nearby Meadowview. There is an abundance of parking on the property, and lots of public parking in town. It takes about ten minutes to ride your bike into town, and 25 to walk. The Laurel Creek, which becomes the South Holston River shortly downstream, moves a LOT of water when it rains upstream. The normally placid, clear, inviting waters can become turbulent, silty and dangerous overnight. After a good wash out, there's no telling what you may find on the beach (arrowheads, bones, polished rocks, beautiful driftwood, maybe some broken glass YIKES...) and care should always be taken to wear protective river shoes. While we make every effort to limit the critters with regular treatments and electronic deterrents, this house is on a river, surrounded by fields and fruit trees, in the middle of three National Forests. There will be bugs, there may be mice, there may even be the occasional snake. We are happy to help with these issues if/when they arise. The Caretaker and family live in the home on the opposite end of the property with the enviable garden. Please treat them as you would your own neighbors, assuming you get along great with your neighbors! If you need anything at all during your stay, don't disturb them but message us here instead and we will respond promptly!
