The park features a spectacular black volcanic sand beach. The spacious and well-maintained campground features picnic table, restrooms, and showers. It's close to seabird colonies, lava tubes, blowholes, freshwater caves, and a natural stone arch. Guests should note that this is a tropical rain forest and, depending on the trade winds, mosquitoes may be present. It wasn't always that way. As one story goes, in 1826 the whaling ship Wellington arrived at Lahaina from Mexico. Seeking fresh water, they dumped their barrels of old water into a river. Unfortunately, mosquito larvae were in the barrels. Another story has angry whalers, banned from Lahaina by the king, dumped their mosquito-infected water for revenge. Nevertheless, mosquitoes were not native to the islands and, sometime in the 1800s, they were introduced to Hawaii. Use the foam pads we supply or bring your own full size air mattress.
