Both in downtown Hilo. •Beach Parks – Richardson’s Beach Park, Onekahakaha Beach Park (the calmest), Carlsmith Beach Park, Reed’s Bay, Lehia Park. I email a complete welcome package that includes the door code, directions, guide to shopping and restaurants and on the many activities and great places to visit. There is a cleaning service between stays who can coordinate handyman services (pretty rarely needed). I do not reside in town but I'm available by email or phone every waking hour. There is more to do in Hilo and the surrounding area than any town on any of the Islands. See my Hilo Activities tab on my site hilovacationhomes. It has the most organized and very complete list of activities separated by driving direction. It also has posts such as Hilo in 1 Day (2 Days, 3 Days). Here is a short list of activities:1. The Hilo zoo is very pretty, and free. 2. A couple miles up the street is Mauna Loa nut company. Self-guided “look through the window” tours are also free. 3. The Hawaii Botanical Gardens just North of Hilo is probably the nicest garden you will ever see. When driving there take the 4 mile scenic route. See my site for details. 4. For waterfalls, there is Boiling Pots and Rainbow falls in Hilo. See both, Boiling Pots is just 2 minutes above Rainbow Falls. You can go in the water at Boiling Pots if you walk down some rocks – and ignore the signs. For that once in a lifetime “swimming under the waterfall” picture, hike to Narnia falls. Directions are here: https://hilovacationhomes.com/activity/secret-narnia-falls-walking-directions-details/ 5. For the tallest waterfall on the Island, visit Akaka Falls about 25 minutes North of Hilo. 6. Yes, Hilo has beer tasting. You can stop by Hilo Brewing Company for beer tasting and excellent local beer. 7. Go online and look up what is showing at the Palace theatre ( www.hilopalace.com), a historical Hilo theatre located downtown and built in the 1920 and nicely restored. 8. The Lyman museum is quite nice. The Tsunami museum is not (except it is housed in an old bank). Just 50 yards away from the Tsunami museum is the Mokupapapa Discovery Center. It is simple and free. 9. Also Downtown is Liliuckalani Gardens on the ocean in Hilo bay. Walk around and go over the bridge to Coconut Island. At the “island” you can jump off a tall platform into the ocean. 10. Near the Liliuckalani Gardens is golfing. If that is too involved or you don’t golf simply use the driving range. While there, get fresh fish caught that day at Suisan market. Attached to the market you can eat. Hilo Bay Café is also here. 11. Walk through an outstanding lava tube – right in Hilo. Kaumana Cave Park (1492 Kaumana Dr., Hilo). Up at the Volcano National Park is Thurston tube, but Kaumana is much better. Bring a flash light and use mosquito repellant. 12. Driving North is quite lush and beautiful. They offer tours of Waipi’o Valley about an hour North of Hilo. I recommend horseback riding through Waipi’o Valley Naalapa Stables. 13. Combine a drive to Volcano National Park with a drive to the Southern side of the Island. Leave early! Stop at Punaluu County Beach Park for lots of black sand and lounging turtles. Just a few miles farther south is Whittington Beach Park. Also worth a quick stop. About 10 minutes beyond the beach parks is the small town of Naalehu. There you will want to stop at the Punaluu bake shop for great sandwiches in a park like setting. At this point you can turn back or go another 30 minutes all the way down South Point Road. It is actually the most Southern point in the U.S. and the vistas are worth seeing. For those with huge hua’s, there is a 40’ cliff dive at the vista. See the Youtube first. Lastly, just as you approach Southpoint vista you will see signs for a green sand beach. For $20/pp you will get driven by 4WD a few miles to visit it. It is worth doing. Don’t take your car. 14. If you are only going to Volcano National Park (really not worth more than a couple hours), go just a mile beyond the park entrance and turn to visit Volcano Winery for a chance to see the beautiful town of Volcano, grab cheese and crackers and taste some odd wine. 15. If time allows, spend half a day and go South on Highway 130. Start by visiting the town of Pahoa. It’s a hippie town with a very Hawaiian feel. Drive through Leilani Estates (see details on my website) for a view of the 2018 lava flow. To first view a video, copy this in your browser: https://www.nps.gov/havo/learn/photosmultimedia/videos.htm. After Leilani estates drive to the end of Highway 130 to see the Kalapana lava flows in the 1980s that destroyed this neighborhood. Witness the braves souls rebuilding off the grid. Before 2018 this page mentioned Champagne Ponds and the warm pool of Ahalanui Park. Both were covered up by the 1918 lava flow. If you drive highway 130 on a Sunday, look up Maku’u farmers market on highway 130 a few miles before Pahoa. We always go there. 16. Go to Kona for the day. It is about a 2:10 minute drive along the Hawaii Belt Road and about 1:45 on Saddle Road. Take one road there and the other one back. When taking Hawaii Belt Road, stop for lunch in Weimea. The cattle country is charming. You will realize there isn’t much to do in Kona and be glad you spent your time in Hilo instead!! You need a car. It is very easy to rent a car at the Hilo airport. It is often cheaper to rent multiple regular cars instead of a minivan. If you are looking for an early check in or late check out please let me know. I grant these if there is no same-day check-in/check-out. No charge. If you need additional beds I have premium air mattresses. Again, no charge.
