Hale ‘Amakihi is a classic Hawaiian wooden house. It is simple and clean with plenty of outside views. Hale ‘Amakihi is situated on two acres of orchard and garden, bees and chickens. Typical of many tropical climates, we have house geckos inside the Hale. The house is a great space for families and friends. Hale ‘Amakihi has two bedrooms, one full bath with shower/tub, a living room with a sleeper sofa, and an expansive lanai with view into ficus, ohia, and bananas. The well-equipped kitchen has a gas stove, microwave, fridge, ice cream-maker, toaster and coffee maker. The UV filtration system makes catchment water safe and delicious for drinking. Free Wi-Fi service is provided. Long-term stays are encouraged, as guests will have the opportunity to get to know the environment. Hale ‘Amakihi is situated on two acres of mixed forest, orchard and garden with beehives and chickens (including one rooster!). We have honey, farm-fresh eggs and fruits when in season. Coqui frogs serenade in the evening and an astounding morning chorus of birds including the native `amakihi makes our place sing! That said, Hale ‘Amakihi is in a quiet neighborhood on a dead-end road, and the area is ideal for relaxation. The owners live in a neighboring house and are attentive to the needs of guests. Interacting with our guests is a pleasure but we also respect their privacy. Hale ‘Amakihi is located in a semi-rural, residential neighborhood in Hawaiian Paradise Park. There are no stores or restaurants in the immediate area. We are about 7 miles from Pahoa and Kea‘au where there are many varied restaurants and stores. We are also less than 20 miles from Hilo and 30 miles from Volcano. The nearby coast has rugged lava rock cliffs with magnificent sea views and wonderful trails and country roads for hiking and running. Farmer’s markets, state and national parks, orchid nurseries, swimming beaches, natural hot ponds, and tide pools for snorkeling are all within an hour or less by car. A car is essential for exploring the island, and major rental car agencies are located at the Hilo and Kona airports. Public transportation is available but requires patience. We are long-term residents of Hawai‘i. Marcos is a biologist at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, and Wendy is a high-school Humanities and Garden teacher at the local charter school from which their son Quinn graduated in 2020. Quinn attends UH Hilo and lives at home. We are beekeepers and cooks who love to grow and use locally-grown organic ingredients. Marcos runs a small-scale aquaponics system with tilapia. We are international travelers who welcome fellow travelers to come, visit Hawai‘i, and stay in a home away from home at our Hale ‘Amakihi.
