PUAKO BEACH is a FRIENDLY, TRANQUIL and HISTORIC oceanfront community, famous for its white sand beaches and turquoise and warm waters populated with whales, dolphins, turtles and reef fish. Water sports abound. If you are looking for a bucolic, safe, PEACEFUL and quiet place to stay, practically on the water, then this is it! Yes, you can hear the waves and feel the ocean breeze. Green grass, fruit and palm trees, plumeria flowers, and a zillion birds grace the grounds. WE WELCOME ALL Your apartment is located in the downstairs half of a two story residential home, located across the street from the Pacific ocean. Recent upgrades include: Kitchen; quartzite counter tops and Island, new decorative tile back splash, new larger cast iron sink and disposal: Bathroom; New Quartz counters, quartz shower stall (tub removed) and stone flooring and new Kohler toilet. New air-conditioning for the summer is next on the list. Installed a new washer and dryer. Terrific improvement over the old one. The apartment is on the ground floor with its own private entrance through a garden atmosphere into a large screened in porch with plants, table and couch. The apartment is 1000sf with a King size bed and air-conditioning in the bedroom. The King bed is made up with Bamboo Sheets, the ultimate in comfort. The back door leads to an outdoor porch with a breakfast table, a small fenced in yard (pet friendly), a barbecue area and with beautiful views of adjacent wild State land and magnificent Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa beyond. Casual lawn chairs are provided for sunning yourself or star gazing in the late evening, a must! We do have a special chorus of morning and evening birds awaiting their next meal.. We provide our guests with snorkel gear, reef slippers, boogie boards, beach chairs and a wonderful breakfast spread (heavy on fresh fruit). With advance notice, we are happy to arrange rentals for any water equipment that we don't have, including kayaks, paddle boards, surf boards, and bicycles. The large living/dining area includes a small island and has been remodeled with a new wood floor, paint and carpets. It is quite lovely, comfortable and inviting; a homey, cool and spacious environment with soft paint colors. The air-conditioning in the bedroom and fans in the other rooms takes care of any heat concerns. There is another home on a separate lot in front of us. We share the driveway so care must be given to parking and noise. You will have your own covered parking stall in the car port. Note, This is our second Airbnb location. ( Please check our other listing on the other side of the Island on the Hamakua Coast, "Paauilo, Far From the Madding Crowd") https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/9939110 You have access to our 6000sf grassy tropical yard, a small fenced area with dining table and lounge chairs, barbecue, expansive lawn and natural plants. Additionally, our back yard opens onto thousands of acres of open and treed State land with a three mile walking trail and unobstructed access to the land for any intrepid hiker. On occasion we have wild pigs, goats and the Hawaiian owl or "Pueo" soaring in the evening air and the ubiquitous flock of wild turkeys. Covered parking provided. Though we live upstairs, we are very quiet and with luck you won't hear a sound. We will be available to assist you with any and all issues including best beaches, best places to snorkel, best restaurants in the area and best luxury hotels to visit as well as our too-many-to-count visitor attractions. We enjoy the company of our guests and will be here to meet your needs. Puako Beach is an old beach front community dating back hundreds of years. Only within the past twenty years has the road been paved and it has become a desired location with multimillion dollar ocean front homes replacing many of the older local beach shacks. There are still some charming old-style places but the number is slowly dwindling as the real estate has become more valuable. It is the only neighborhood on the west side of the Island with easy ocean access without security gates and restricted access. Some of our favorite times here are walking the dogs late at night on the deserted moon lit road, quiet early morning walks along the fire break open land behind our place, and early morning or evening ocean plunges at the County Park. (the swimming hole. See pic.) Nearby eats in Kawaihae (15mn): Most days from 1pm to 5pm, down at the Blue Dragon parking lot, you can visit the most delicious Hawaii Shave Ice wagon on the planet!- pure snow with hundreds of flavor combinations. (Sundays you may wait 30 minutes) Around the corner is another wagon, the Fish Wagon where you can indulge yourself for lunch with a seared Ahi caesar salad for $9. Nights are wonderful. Skip the resorts and instead try our favorite, the Seafood Bar (steamed Mong Chong is to die for) or Cafe Pesto or the Plantation House, all very delicious. The Blue Dragon is the only open air dance spot with wonderful food and the best bartender on the Island. Come early as parking can be difficult. Puako is a popular area for joggers, walkers and bikers as the three mile road dead ends and has no outlet. The end of the road is the County park. Its popularity is limited only by its lack of white sand beaches but the reefs and amazing snorkeling more than make up for it. The close-by white sand beaches on the other hand take most of the visitors and locals looking for a day outing in the sun and surf. Quick mention: besides the local Puako General Store (which, though modest in size, carries a surprising variety of goods including pre-made meals) groceries and other sundry items can be found at either one of two markets; one at the Mauna Lani resort shopping center and one at the Waikoloa resort Queens Shops. It's not a bad idea to have a rental car. Although a rental bicycle can take you most anywhere in the close vicinity of our place with ease, a car is a must in order to see this beautiful and amazing island. Public transportation is not available in Puako but buses do run on the main highways around the island. As you can imagine there are many car rental agencies here. It pays to shop around for a weekly rate and unless you plan to go off road, a two wheel drive car works fine. Folks often ask about the whales and yes, they are in abundance during the winter months (late November to early April) and lovely to watch from the shore as they breech with frequency and often you can see them jumping from the ocean. Our weather is mostly sunny with the occasional rain shower, and temperatures ranging from the low 70s F (21 C) to mid 80s F (30 C) during the winter and 80s F (30 C) to 90s F (35 C) in the short summer months. It is a comfortable 15 minute walk south along the ocean to the Fairmont Orchid hotel with its excellent restaurants (though access to resort facilities are restricted to guests). A mile walk or drive north on Puako Beach road brings you to our small local grocery store which is open from 8am to 7pm daily. Puako Beach road is about three miles long and dead ends at a County park. It is a popular three mile walking and biking area. There is Beach Access every 1/4 mile which makes for 12 beach/reef access points (with great snorkeling and turtle viewing) including the County park and County boat launch. Close local beaches include: BEACH 69 aka WAIALEA BAY STATE PARK (10min)-our personal favorite with good snorkeling and boogie boarding, bathroom facilities and lots of shade, SPENCER BEACH (15min)-very kid friendly, MAUNA KEA beach (12min)-an amazing crescent of white sand in a clear calm cove, and HAPUNA BEACH STATE PARK (10min)-the Islands most famous and popular -white sand, great boogie boarding and picnic tables and BBQing facilities. (See pictures) Nearby resorts, dining and shopping include: The Mauna Kea Hotel, the Hapuna Prince Hotel, the Mauna Lani Hotel, the Fairmont Orchid Hotel, the Waikoloa Hilton Hotel and the Waikoloa Marriott all within 25 minutes. Further south you will find the Four Seasons Hotel. There are many shops and great restaurants at the Mauna Lani Resort and two shopping complexes with great stores and restaurants at the Waikoloa Resorts. With advance notice, we are happy to arrange rentals for any water equipment that we don't have, including kayaks, paddle boards, surf boards, and bicycles. If you are looking for Scuba gear check out nearby Kawaihae Harbor for rentals. There are also plenty of snorkel or scuba tours if you prefer going with a company.
