Early American fashions of the late 1700's to mid-1800's required many buttons on both male and female garments. Buttons were even essential to underwear, shoes, corsets and women's basque waist. Buttons of the time period were made of ivory, bone, shell, wood, stone, glass, whale bone or animal horn. This property served as a factory, producing and selling buttons to clothiers of the Guilford and CT shoreline area.
