River Cottage: Peaceful + stylish country getaway
With the rocky headwaters of the Neversink River out back, the calming sounds are just the beginning of how River Cottage provides a relaxing environment for true R&R. A crackling fire in winter, wraparound decks and bluestone patio for summer, on the lawn seating or by the fire pit, there are lots of hangout spaces where everyone can find their favorite nook. The space River Cottage is a sweet getaway with bright, cheerful décor, set on a quiet dead end lane. The house has an “L” shaped deck that looks out into the pretty woods out back, and out over the landscaped side patio and lawn beyond. Just past the fire pit in the woods, the tumbling headwaters of the Neversink River is both a visually beautiful spot, but also provides a calming sound that with summertime windows open lulls you to sleep. Though petite in terms of square footage, the space feels airy and bright, with a cathedral ceiling, large picture windows and skylights. There is comfortable seating where you’ll happily relax in front of the glass-fronted fireplace or perhaps settle in to watch a movie. And if work you must, there is hi speed cable internet. There are two bedrooms (queen and full), one of which has glass doors that open onto the back deck. The updated bathroom has a soaking tub/shower. While located in an incredibly peaceful spot, the cottage is visible from the very sleepy lane, which has about six active homes in total along its third of a mile stretch, some used only in summer. The open plan space includes an updated kitchen with gas stove, which in turn flows into the dining area. A glass sliding door on one side leads out to a deck that enjoys wonderful morning sunshine, while the picture window on the other provides glimpses into the woods, where you might spot a deer or a flock of turkeys. Other things to note Claryville itself is unique in the extent to which its lands are part of the “Forever Wild” Catskill Park or preserved under the NYC Watershed umbrella. Yet a scenic 30 minute drive lands you in Livingston Manor, which has become the go-to town in the region with its shops, breweries and food options. There are myriad area hiking trails in and around Claryville, and the Red Hill Fire Tower hike is under five minutes from the house. These back roads are wonderful for bicycling, jogging or just meandering past fields and the river as it appears and disappears from view.
