Rent an architectural sanctuary five miles from Idyllwild center. Sited on a 7 acre parcel is architect Robert Skinner's former personal retreat. An open plan loft style interior complete with fireplace and built-ins perfectly capture the mountain and pond views while the deck extends outdoors. Vaulted wooden ceilings highlight a warm kitchen. Master bedroom has fireplace and private deck. Solar panels make this stay ecofriendly well. Come experience architecture harmonizing with nature. The space This unique home was designed and built by the mid-century master architect Robert H. Skinner, whose work was featured in the renowned Julius Shulman's "Case Study Houses". The house was built as Skinner's personal retreat in 1981. Built in a park-like setting on over 7 private acres in the San Jacinto mountains and adjacent to the San Bernadino National Forest, the home is less than an hour from Palm Springs and just two hours from either Los Angeles or San Diego. Sited on the last of a rare chain of small spring-fed mountain lakes 10 minutes from Idyllwild, the setting exudes peace and serenity on a pond teeming with wildlife. (Please note that the pond depth is seasonal.) This extraordinary home is the perfect getaway for a writer, artist, or any lover of architecture and the environment. Designed to be sustainable, the 2800 sq. foot house runs entirely on solar power and draws water from its two dedicated private wells. The kitchen has all new appliances and the entire house has been professionally decorated with period-appropriate and unique furnishings. With an effect that blurs the distinction between where the indoor space ends and the outdoors begin, ten-foot high glass windows and doors run the entire length of the home and overlook the pond and the mountains beyond. The two floors are seamlessly integrated in a loft-like design. Skylights in both upstairs bedrooms let in the sun and the moon. A fantastic den/study has a deep, wrap-around drafting desk perfect for writing or making art. The den/study has a custom floating lighting system that turns working into a delight. The master bedroom has a new large flat screen TV, DVD player, queen-size bed, built-in closet, a wood fireplace, and a private deck. The master bath has ample closet space, full-length mirrors, a shower, and a gorgeous soaking tub under a skylight. The second upstairs bedroom has twin beds, which can be combined to make a king-size, and is completely private. In addition to the two bedrooms upstairs, there is a family suite of two bedroom and a full bath on the first floor, making two connected but distinct sleeping areas for privacy -- perfect for two couples to share the house, or for children to have their own space. Many built-ins designed by the architect allow maximum storage while letting the amazing variety of wood details fill the house with color and elegance. The house is a study in the use of warm wood tones: The floors are white oak, the walls are yellow cedar, the ceilings are heart-redwood and the built-in furniture is teak. There is wireless internet throughout the house. The large living room has a second fireplace, flat-screen TV, and a beautiful collection of mid-century and modern furniture, with breathtaking views of the seasonal pond and surrounding mountains. The large outdoor deck has a gas BBQ, outdoor dining table, chaise lounge and chairs for relaxing and a fantastic outdoor shower so you can bathe with a view of the pond and mountains. Guest access You will have access to the entire house, both the main space and the annex. And you are welcome to explore all of the 7 acres of the property. Please be aware that there is a garage at the far side of the property which guests do not have access to. Other things to note *Please note that weekly rentals may not start on a Saturday. We may require a three night minimum for Holiday Weekends. *PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE OPEN LOFT DESIGN OF THIS HOUSE AND THE DECK IS NOT SUITABLE TO VERY YOUNG CHILDREN. *THIS IS NOT A "PARTY" HOUSE. ITS GREAT FOR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS WHO WANT TO HANG AND DECOMPRESS. BUT WE ARE IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA WITH NEIGHBORS WHO ARE (UNDERSTANDABLY) DEEPLY CONCERNED ABOUT PARTIES. WE WOULD LOVE TO HOST YOU, BUT IF YOU ARE PLANNING A LOUD TIME, PLEASE CONSIDER LOOKING ELSEWHERE.
